Our DS 7, has suspected ADHD. He really struggles at school and is already working at least 1 year behind. We also think he has some sensory issues. He struggles to concentrate both at school and at home and is making repetitive noises all the time.

We are on the waiting list for CAMHS but it's between 18 months and 2 years at the moment. Due to Covid we can't afford to go private .

The school have Ed Psych coming in to see him in January (Covid depending) and we have an IEP in place.

We have also contacted Post Adoption Support to see if there is anything they can help with. The Adoption Support Fund doesn't fund medical diagnosis so can't help with a faster diagnosis, but may be able to help with some of the sensory therapies.

Is there anything else we can do?. Is there typically any medication available to help with the fidgeting/focus etc?. Knowing that we aren't able to get him more help for best part of 2 years is heartbreaking.

Thanks for reading

Check out the ADHD foundation, it's in Liverpool but have a lot of info on the website X

The ASF can fund a multi disciplinary assessment and this can include ADHD. We couldn't find anyone to do this so we used DS' DLA money to fund his assessment at the one year mark.

And yes, the meds help a lot. DS literally runs up and down on the spot when his have worn off.

Meds can be incredibly helpful. My dd was diagnosed at 15. Could you afford to go for a private assessment?

If he's adopted is there any chance it's trauma or attachment disorder?

I would speak to the School nurse, teacher and SENCO

Or whoever organises the IEP

Go to the GP and request referral under right to choose to Psychiatry UK - it’s a private route funded by NHS. If your doctor won’t, find one that will. Good luck

Repetitive noises aren't necessarily indicating ADHD. Keep an open mind re causes and consider what you know about early months or years as a pp said.

Thanks everyone. We are still waiting for CAMHS but spoke to PA support. They are organising a needs assessment with social services. We have also contacted a sensory needs place who will do an assessment for us for those areas. That's private but first appt in Jan so that's good. He has Ed psych coming into school in Jan too (COVID depending of course).

So 3 different approaches and hopefully they will join up at some point. We were told that the ASF will only fund therapies hence why we are getting the LEAP assessment done first. Then by the time we approach PA support re an ASF application, hopefully we will have had the social services assessment done too.

It's keeping us busy if nothing else. Still, every little bit of help we can get will be a win

How long has he been with you. Are you sure its not emotionals and social problems due to his past?
