We got a trio of quail last year, two girls and one boy, with the idea of adding more this year. Unfortunately we didn't add any more, because we originally planned to hatch our own and then decided it wasn't a good plan as we wouldn't have the willpower to dispatch unwanted males. We lost one of the girls who had a neurological issue about 4 months ago, the other two were fine and dandy, but I've just gone to see them and sadly our boy has died at some point during the day - he was fine this morning :(

The problem is that I don't really want to be taking on more quail, but equally I'm aware that the remaining girl probably shouldn't be left alone, as they are social - do I have any other options than going and getting her a pair of friends?

i think you already know the answer to this!! It isnt really fair to keep a bird like this on its own. why dont you buy some quail eggs over the internet, get a little 7 egg incubator (we have one all done by the machine even the turning) and a lamp and hatch some babies. very satisfying to do and much better for poor old nobby no mates quail.
