Car seats

Best seat for three year old

Hi all.

My almost 1 yr old dd is approaching the end of time in the Maxi Cosi. We have the graco Milestone that my almost 3 yr old is in.

My plan is to give the Milestone to the 1 yr old and leave her rear facing for a while longer. This seat will, in theory, do her until she’s 12.

So, I’d then need one for the three year old. Which one is best? Don’t want one with all the features if not necessary, keen to spend under £100 but safety comes first. Any help gratefully received.

We just got a Cosy and Safe Excalibur for our enormous toddler. It's a little more than £100 at about £130 but goes up until a car seat is no longer need as a high back booster and also allows you to continue using a 5 point harness up to 25kg which is much longer than most car seats which stop using the harness at 18kg. We're really pleased with it, it's really good quality.

How much does your 3 year old weigh? If they are under 18kg there are a few sub-£100 Joie car seats that would keep her rear facing a bit longer. Then when they outgrows that you can swap again.

The Milestone only rear faces to 13kg, the same as an infant carrier.

You would be much better buying a proper rear facing seat for your 1 year old. How much does she weigh? If she's not on the higher centiles, the Joie Stages would rear face to 18kg. If she's over the 50th centile and you want to rear face to 4 (the recommended age to move to a high back booster), you would be better with a 25kg seat like the Britax Two Way Elite.

Your 3 old would obviously be far safer in a rear facing seat as well but if you don't want to rear face her, you would be better sticking with the Milestone.

Thanks. Three year old makes such a racket when rear facing thatbits far safer for her to be forward facing. I know you can’t allow for other drivers, but me turning round to sush her isn’t doing anyone any favours

If she's 50th centile she should have a bit longer in a Maxi Cosi yet, they're huge. Make sure you're pulling her nappy right down into the crotch strap and it'll last until her head reaches the top.

Otherwise I'd go for the Joie Stages. She should get to 4 in it and it's £99 so on budget!
