We're thinking of going for may half term as it looks beautiful - anyone been? Will our large dome tent survive NW winds or shall I wimp out and try to book a wigwam??

Cheers

Haven't stayed at the Sands, but have had several fantastic holidays staying in Badachro (couple of miles outside Gairloch) and have visited the Sands centre to go to the beach there. Beach is fantastic and the camping facilities look good - site is spacious, large clean toilet blocks, kids play areas, small shop.

You'll have to cross fingers for good weather (as ever in Scotland) - but the site is kind of set in to the dunes so may be able to find a slightly sheltered spot from the wind.

Hope you have a great time!

It's lovely. One of the good things about it tbh, is that it gets a breeze which helps to keep down the midges..

We were staying on a croft in Big Sand last May and it was absolutely wonderful. It will probably get quite cold at night so make sure you have cosy sleeping bags. There were certainly plenty of people at the campsite though.

Fingers crossed for the weather for you. (especially as we'll be heading up that way again, near Redpoint this time, last week in May!)

I'm getting excited about it and I'm not even going. I'd say the Gairloch area is worth a 10 hr drive...

Don't know how well you know the area, but if you want to explore beyond Big Sand there are lots of lovely beaches (try Mellon Udrigle), nice bike ride from Big Sand out to lighthouse with cafe etc ont the way, coffee shop in Gairloch with largest cake portions ever (think it's called the Mountain something), nice pub with outdoor area on harbour at Badachro, tiny swimming pool at Poolewe for weather disasters...

Have fun!

It's ace. Have stayed at big sands and camped around there and friend's own a holiday home there too.

There is a fabulous restaurant about 5 miles or so away. You just keep driving north along the coast road away from Gairloch and you'll get to it eventually. Well worth a visit!
