camping inOctober half term?

Justwondered if anyone does this or is it too cold? The weather has been so wet this summer we've hardly used our tent and wondered how long the season extends........here's dreaming of an indian summer.......

I'm considering it. We went away in october last year (n.wales), to a holiday cottage, and came back with sun tans.

Damart really does excellent vests, for all the family.

Hmm just thinking same thing, have cancelled a 'holiday' at a haven campsite because of bad reviews but cannot get money back so am transfering to another site but have to use it this year which leaves October Half Term..am thinking quilts, sleeping bags , sleeping fully dressed...might be fun?

Have camped a number of times round the middle of Oct but hve 4 season bags and a good small tent so never had a problem with the cold at all. As long as you are well wrapped up you shoudl be fine I think

We have often camped in October with no problem. This year we camped at New Year and in early March too, which was pretty cold.

As everyone here says, wrapping up is the key. Full thermal underwear is essential, particularly at night, and warm socks. A good sleeping bag, or even better a duvet, and plenty of blankets and a well insulated mattress and you should be fine.

We usually take a butane gas camping heater as well just to warm up the tent while getting ready for bed. If you have EHU, of course, you can have an electric fan heater which is probably even better.

The evenings will be dark a lot earlier of course so if you can go to a site which allows campfires that will probably be more fun and a good way of staying warm all evening.

The most important thing though I think is a warm woolly hat, as you lose most of your heat through your head. I often wear mine in bed and find this is the best way of staying warm all night if not the most stylish.

I did read an article in a Camping magazine about really cold weather camping where this bloke wore a face mask - the sort you use when you are doing DIY to avoid dust - and he said this stopped his face from getting cold where it poked out of his sleeping bag and let him breathe too (always useful). Possibly a bit extreme in October though...

I am tempted, I'll watch the weather nearer the time, as I wore thermals and a hat in July I don't really fancy my chances!!

the main problem we found last year was how dark it got - we haven't electric hook up and campfires werent allowed on site. The evenings were rather long trying to peer at a book with a torch!
Also woke up in a panic in the middle of the night as it was utterly pitch black and all I could hear was very loud mooing. Next morning dd calmly announced that a cow had stepped on her bit of the tent in the night all round her end was surrounded by cowpats!
