Campsites in Oxford/Abingdon-ideally something quiet, basic, rustic and cheap

but there are also LOTS of good sites that aren't on there, esp the small ones

all the oxford ones seem to be swimming pool and electric hook up type places, which isn't my sort of thing

we staying in bletchington - was not overly massive and had nice playground.

oh britchcombe, I know, have heard fabulous fabulous things but also in guardian said that you had to cross a road to get to the loos.

I don't like swimming pools, "entertainment".

And, tbh, I don't like rows of caravans. I don't mind caravans, just not in rows. I like a bit of chaos.

I do like a nice farm shop though.

Yes you do have to cross the road to get to the loos/showers but I've read the road is extremely quiet and rarely used....mmmmm, knowing my luck I'd be desperate running across with my hand between my legs and a nice big filthy dirty tractor will come rumbling by!

yea it looks lovely and the owner sounds very nice but I wouldn't trust my bladder that much .... everyone says its a quiet road but it could be the M25 for all we know. I'm used to getting up in the night and crossing the hallway for a wee...not a road for gods sake!

Yes, you do cross a road, so no letting kids go on their own. It is a country road so not much traffic but the few cars you do get can go fast - but you can hear them. We had loads of kids with us, it was fine.

There are also portaloos at busy times in the fields - we never used them. The walk was no further than we have had before on large sites when we are camped away from loo block.

MArcella is 79, and drives around in her Landrover checking everyone is ok. She is delightful, makes cream teas some weekends!!! We tried them She sells bags of firewood & lighter stuff for £3 - enough to last all night. Costs £4 adult & £2 child per night. Stay in Sheeplands field (nearest to the loos)

The walk to the Whitehorse along the ridgeway is a must.

I can see it now....my 8yo wakes up during the night....'I need a wee'....I'm cosy in my sleeping bag....'ok darling, just unzip the tent, go down to the edge of the field, over the style, hop across that road over to your right and just in front of you are the loos....' There is no way, NO WAY, I'd be getting up out of my warm, cosy, snuggly sleeping bag to help my kids to the loo....NO WAY..!!! I'll just have to starve them of fluids from 9am each day to make sure they go through the following night!

The ones in our party who didn't want the trek used the portaloos - that's what they are for.

There IS a small field next to the loos, some like it for that reason, but we preferred the rolling fields where we were. This small field has hardstanding for caravans, and 2 VERY old permanent vans in it. If not busy, you could ask for this - that's where the electric hook ups are.

By the way, there is a Campers fridge freezer which is free to use. No-one was using the fridge, but the freezer was full of ice-packs.
