Trailer tent - should we go for it?

We've just converted to a TT. We find the beds so much more comfy and love the amount of space we get- we have 3 kids and they are only going to get bigger.

Pitching/striking wise it takes about the same as our previous tent but the main advantage is that most of the stuff is in the tent ready to go. So whereas we used to spend at least 2 hours getting stuff from the storage places in the house, fixing the roofbox to the car, carrying it out to the car and then DH almost having a fit to get it all in all we do now is pack clothes, the coolbox and a few other bits and then we go. It's the same when striking.

But there are downsides, I agree about that you might not get as many sites, you do have to level it well (we got a spirit level for the TT), factor in the (possible) costs of buying it, towbars, storage, servicing, insurance, extra fees on toll roads and ferries etc. And it's taken us a while to get used to it, it doesn't quite feel like proper camping yet.

I'm hopefully getting one in the next few weeks. Looking for a cheap and cheerful one to check we like/use it and then upgrade later.

Thanks for replies and link to previous thread. DD and DS very keen to get me in a tent but don't want to sleep on ground!

Before we moved we had our amazing 1985 Conway Carmargue folding camper. We had it for a couple of years and the whole family loved it for the space and the sleeping arrangements. We could get it pitched so quickly and it didn't take long to strike it. The only things I needed to pack was clothes and any entertainment that we wanted.

What I had at home was a lidded box which had wellies and trainers in. With those I would put woolly hats, baseball hats and rolled up whindcheaters/kagouls. Then 5 lidded boxes (one for each of us) with a couple of jumpers, couple of trousers, some shorts, long and short sleeve tees, couple of pair of swim shorts, pants and socks in each one. The boxes lived under the stairs. Bung it in the car the night before. The kids would each have a daysac for putting in anything they wanted to take with them (we kept board games and colouring stuff etc. in the trailer.) I would also make up a picnic we could eat in the car the night before.

Get home Friday, change clothes and hitch the trailer, grab picnic and away.

Weekend camps we always stayed within an hour or so of home and longer breaks we would go further. We camped a lot more with the TT.
