milk? How long does it last once open

We are not taking a fridge or coolbag. Just wondered would a 2 pint bottle of milk be okay for the day out of a fridge?

What does everyone else do? I have no electrical hook up so this time round clueless for the camping trip.

Food Saftey says that milk should only be out of the fridge for a MAX of 20 minutes.

Take powdered milk.

You don't want to be camping with food poisioning

I have found that the lacto free milk keeps for ever out of the fridge, and tastes just the same. Im really intolerant to milk thats even the teeniest bit iffy, but I have found that I can leave a 2l carton of lacto free standing in the kitchen literally for 3 days without a sniff of the fridge, and its still OK.

Thanks for that will look at powdered milk. Havent heard of lacto free milk, will go and nose at that in the supermarket as well.

I always freeze our milk and once lifted out of the freezer it usually lasts the weekend. Just give it a good shake each time you use it.

Blimey! better tell that to my milkman then, who drives away from the depot at ?4am, delivers to me at 7am, and I might take the milk in at 10am, or later sometimes. That milk's been out of the fridge for 5+ hours!

What do you think people do in countries where there are no fridges? Or, indeed, in this country up to about 1930?

UHT milk lasts for much longer than regular milk out of the fridge even after its been opened (and of course you can take several cartons & they will store happily unopened for all the holiday). Unless it is very hot weather a litre will happily last for a couple of days.

Having said that if it is for teas/coffees, powdered milk is a good solution.

Think I will stick with powdered milk for tea and coffee, great idea.

Will look into full fat milk for dc, I might ring the campsite tomorrow and ask if they sell it. Then I can buy it in the evening and dc can gozzle it all night.

A bucket of cold water is a good alternative to a fridge/coolbox for that sort of thing (if the milk's in a plastic screw-top type carton).

You do have a fire bucket, don't you....?

We buy (UHT) milk in the evening, use it in our tea/coffee and then put the rest in a vacuum flask. Then we finish off the rest of the milk in the morning. We've not got food poisoning yet.

I find it lasts well enough overnight, especially in cooler weather (don't tend to go camping when it's very hot anyway).

Oh FGS, milk will be fine out of a fridge for a few hours. Stick the it in a bucket of cold water if you're that worried.

OR, take 1 pint cold, and another frozen. The frozen one will keep the other one cool, and be defrosted by the time you need it

What really annoys me when you go camping is the camping shops that dont well full fat milk for children. I have now decided to use a flask teas/coffee and cereals. And will buy a pint of full fat each evening.

I only asked jreththegoblinking because I dont want to end up with food posioning!!!!

I take small (pint size) uht milk which can be opened as and when. A pint is usually good for me and OH for brekkie (cereal and a couple of cuppas each). Powdered milk is ok but remember that you can't put it straight in boiling water or it goes lumpy! Coffee compliment or coffee whitener is ok for coffee - gross in tea. You can also get individual milk (like in a cafe etc) from some shops (I noticed them in Costco a few weeks ago), also saw little packs of that locto free milk stuff in Asda the other day.
I agree with the bucket of water thing. If you fill your washing up bowl with cold water and put in butter/milk etc (take cliplocks) they will be fine overnight!)

Franchini, my experience with powdered milk (oddly) is that Co-op basics range powdered milk is fine stirred directly into tea (don't drink coffee so can't speak for that). But just regular not basics powdered milk does go lumpy, for some reason - it seems to be much more finely powdered, and therefore 'clumps', maybe?

We always put ours in a thermos flask. That way it stays colder for much longer. Usually fine for the next morning, even through to the evening sometimes. If you have a stainless steel flask, put it in the fridge for a couple of hours to make it really cold before you fill it with milk which will also help keep it colder for longer.

I have taken milk for a whole weekend and just stuck the bottle in some cold water which I replaced in the evening.
