Burning more calories than you consume!?

At the risk of sounding a bit daft what does this mean!?

I'm working out every day 6 days a week each of my workouts I burn about 250 cardio and not sure what I'm burning doing resistance training but I'm guessing I'm burning about 350+ calories per one hour workout.

I want to build lean muscle and have definition but I also have weight to lose I am watching my calories at no more than 1480 per day.

I keep hearing everyone saying the advice is if you want to lose weight as well on the scales I should be burning more calories than I consume. Does this mean I should be doing 1000+ calorie workouts!?

Confused!!

No, don't worry! You burn a lot of calories just in your day to day life.

everything you do, including thinking, breathing, mumsnetting etc burns calories because that's your body's fuel.

What you're doing sounds fine to me.

I would say you could easily burn more calories in a workout. I aim for min 500-600 from cardio (usually under an hour) and then resistance on top. Have you tried any classes?

If I put everything into my fitness pal, I come under my calorie allowance even with my terrible sugar heavy diet.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm doing a get lean and burn fat plan and the advice for that is never to do more than 45 minute cardio a day and stick to HIIT. So I do 20 mins HIIT on the treadmill then 20 mins HIIT on the rowing machine or cross trainer. I've been told to mix it up so my body doesn't get used to it.

I have a PT but haven't seen him this week so thought I'd ask here.

I do swimming afterwards each time so I'm probably burning more calories than I'm giving myself credit for. Just wondered if I was supposed to be burning a whopping 1400 calories!!

I may get a HRM.
Thanks again!

You have a TDEE which is what your body needs to keep going, as you're eating 1400 and burning 350 I suspect you're already burning more than you consume....unless you're tiny.

Thanks juneybean.

I'm not tiny! So I'm guessing I probably am burning enough. Weigh day Saturday :-)

I know for my level of activity I naturally burn about 1800 cals per day so to lose weight I have to eat less than that or exercise. I'm using myfitnesspal to restrict my cals to 1200 per day but any exercise I do is added to my calorie allowance, my exercise only consists of brisk walks and housework. I've lost 5lbs in 4 weeks but I'm not following it at the weekends so I've been losing 2or 3 then gaining 1 at weekend but I'm happy with that, I wouldn't stick to it if I didn't have a break from it, it's really hard! x

I have a HRM which is fab. My calories consumption is between 1200-1300 per day and I usually burn off 800-900 cals in a 1hr 50 gym session.

Re classes I found that classes such as combat/attack give a 500 cal burn, spin about 400 and body pump between 350-400 and metafit is about 250-300 for half hour.

I find the best results for calories burning the gym.

But keep doing what you are doing, it sounds fine but yes get a monitor as they are great - the machines in the gym are so inaccurate re calorie burning and normally say you are burning way more than you actually are.

There used to be calculators on the web (presume there still is, google) which after you've filled out some info gives you a rudimentary number (guide) as to how many calories you burn just going about your business.

So add to what you burn just living what you burn at the gym and take it away from what you consume and bingo if you are left with zero or a negative figure you are doing it correctly (if that's what you are wanting)
