Infant feeding

4 wk DS guzzles, milk everywhere, what's going on?

Hi, my DS is just over 4 wks and is 100% BF. In the last few days he has taken to guzzling at the breast - so fast I have to take him off as he usually chokes otherwise. Once he's back on, he happily feeds, still guzzling sometimes, but lets the milk trickle out the side of his mouth and all over me.

Is this something experienced by anyone else? He also has a blocked nose and has done for two weeks which makes the guzzling worse - it's almost as if he's trying to get as much down without breathing! But he won't stop drinking unless I stop him!

Could this be over abundant supply? My boobs have recently been getting quite full and even painful between some feeds - I though engorgement only happened earlier on? I've only expressed twice so don't think it's that which has upped supply. I haven't noticed a growth spurt either.

Also weight gain is normal! Well he's 11lb 11oz at 4 weeks (9lb 4 at birth)

Sound exactly like my DS who is 5 weeks. Weights even pretty much same. I have very free flow boobs so he has no choice but to guzzle. He does the choking and dribbling too. He seems to prefer it being held more upright and/or latching on the boob from above (I lie on my side, and he sits into my tummy and attaches to the top boob) - this means he has more control and the milk isn't hitting the back of his throat at a rate of knotts!

I still get engorged if he doesn't feed every 2 hours or so. Boobs get very tingly then, fortunately not leaky though.

Yes I get the tingling too! I've tried more upright positions which help a bit but not always (mainly at nighg when I'm tired and don't do it properly). The choking terrifies me at times as he looks a bit stunned.

Try saline drops for the blocked nose?

Will try saline drops -though midwife suggest breastmilk... I tried unsuccessfully to stick my nipple up his nose last night!

LOL - tiny baby nostril + hoofing big nipple (mine are anyway). Try expressing some and using a dropper - though in the middle of the night you'll try anything.

Mine was up to 3am last night, he's a bit colicky as well as snuffly. Every time he fell asleep on me, then I'd try and put him down he'd wake up . I ended up having to leave him screaming in the cot just so I could get undressed and ready for bed. Cue DP & DD waking (who promptly threw a tantrum that she couldn't come in our bed). Have just been back to bed for 3 hours

That's normal, burp him after the first minute or two, he won't be too happy about it but it will stop him throwing it all up at the end of the feed or sooner. He will sort himself out before very long.

Sounds like my DS lion although 3 hours sleep is some way off!! Yep I have large nips and felt sorry for the poor boy...

Will try burping him chubbleigh - I'm convinced his belly fills with air which can't be good!!

Re the milk trickling out and down your side, might be worth getting someone to check baby for Tongue tie this was how we realised my dd has one. She also gained weight steadily. Just a thought....

mcflumpy did milk always dribble out the side? My DS has only been doing this since he's been choking at the start of feeds. I can get the HV to check though.
