breast fed baby looks "lean"

ds now 10mths and i think he looks rather lean, he has a broad/squarish face + looks good with clothes on , but i think his arms and legs are thin looking,i might be overly concerned, its just he's not as meaty as he was, birth weight was 11lb 2 and at 9 1/2 mths he was 19lb 2 (i think under the 1/2 lb mark anyway). he'll hardly be twice his birth weight for his birthday.

i know i shouldnt worry as he eats well, but his feeds from me am and pm are v quick and i feel like he gets nothing.

all babies are different... so don't compare him to others.

according to my book, the 50th centile for 10 months is approx 9.5 kg which is just over 20lb

so he's probably about right¬

oh yes... and bear in mind that the charts are for bottle fed babies...

so i bet he is spot on for a b/f baby! they are said to be longer and "leaner" than bottle fed babies!

my bottlefed dd was much meatier than bf ds. though he is massive, he's not podgy. muscley instead!

Hermykne, I have seen on other threads that a baby's birth weight doesn't indicate the actual size of the child/adult. Your baby was well over the UK average of 7lbs 4oz. He may be moving towards whatever his ideal weight/size should be?
Just as an example, my 5 4' friend and her 5 8' husband (so not super tall) had a 10lb 8oz girl. She is now just over average in height and (around 50th centile for weight. She slid down the centiles over time, but is a very healthy happy little girl.
Incidentally my ds was three weeks early and he has never had much fat, he is a very muscley, lively healthy little baby boy. I know from experience a baby's weight is so emotive for mums, but I'm sure you are doing a fantastic job.
Just think your ds will be a lean child and adult and hopefully avoid you having to worry about him being an overweight child - which seems to increasingly common.

hi all
thanks for all your info - maisiemog, and others
dinny he is v active, been crawling since 7 1/2mth.

i saw a 10mth old this morn and he was smaller than mine, so i am not so worried, u just think maybe where does it all go - i.e the food - but i suppose he burns the calories crawling

thanks again

My daughter was (still is) long and lean, too. She never had those podgy legs that most babies have (you know the ones you just want to eat? Or is that just me ) and people always told me she looked skinny. She is now 4, active, healthy, and those long, skinny legs are now to die for.

As long as he's eating well, is fit, active and happy, then he's fine.

DD is a skinny baby too and quite small for her age and people have commented to dp about how skinny she is and they meet me and all is explained I come from a family of skinny girls so no surprise that dd takes after me at all. all children are different and as long as he seems healthy, active and fit thats the main thing.
