Infant feeding

Has anyone found it really painful to feed a baby with teeth?

ds is nearly 11 months and has 6 teeth. He's not biting me it's just sore, his teeth feel really sharp and it's getting so that I'm dreading feeding him. strangely it only seems to hurt when I'm feeding him on the right side so maybe it's not just the teeth? Everyone always said feeding a baby with teeth shouldn't hurt so what's the problem here?

Which teeth is it that are hurting? Top or bottom? I find that DS's top teeth can dig in a bit, but not painfully. But if I am careless about positioning on my left side, his bottom teeth dig in and that hurts!

I think they can get a bit lazy about how they latch on and it can get sore. Try making sure when you feed him, his chin's not tucked down onto his chest.

it's the top teeth. I'll double check the positioning next time but I'm sure that's fine. It's not just them digging in a bit, it's actually really painful and it hurts even when I'm not feeding him, it feels like I've been scratched or something. Is it possible to have really scratchy teeth? That sounds really stupid

One thing that doesn't help is he kind of pushes me away with his free hand while he is feeding and I can't seem to stop him.

I've never had a problem with teeth.

then I wonder why it is hurting so much for me? maybe ds has weird long sharp teeth? I don't want to stop feeding him but it really hurts!

beansmum, my ds is 6m and has two bottom teeth (about 2mm long!) and it is killing my left nipple. my ds also does the pushing away thing. I think most of the damage is done when i feed him in bed and am too sleepy to reposition him - he drifts off to the end of my nipple and scrapes his teeth on it. nice.

I'm now thinking that it might not be the teeth that are the problem, my right side is kind of aching now but the scratchy pain is still there too. Maybe it was already sore and ds has scratched me with his teeth as well. any idea what an ache on one side might be?

no cracks, a couple of scratches from ds's fingernails but that's it.

Mine is 15 months and thinks it is hilarious to bite me-regularly! Don't know what to do!

I'm so glad ds doesn't bite! he sometimes starts to bite down and I can see him looking at me out of the corner of his eye, but he has never given me a proper bite.

I stopped BF at 9 months as it was a vicious circle of bitting and soreness - just gave up in the end!

DS does the pushing at my boob thing too (he went through a phase of doing it really strongly when he was about 11 months old) - he does it less now though.

I wish there was more information out there about breastfeeding older children!

dd3 has 8 teeth and it's been painful feeding her since she got them at 8 months or so. she's 12 months now and for me it's just another reason to stop bf at this point. I can't stop her as she's not biting, she's just got a sharp nip to her, even as a newborn she was like that.
