Infant feeding

If you held off weaning to 6 months - what foods did you start baby with?

Ds is 6 months and has not had solids yet. I've heard people say they went straight to finger foods and 'what the rest of the family were eating'. But ds hasn't got any teeth! What foods did you give yours and were they able to handle finger foods?
This is third dc and wish I'd held the others back from weaning.

baby rice and breast milk first day

pureed carrot and baby rice 2nd day (2 meals)

pureed sweet potato and pureed carrot 3rd day

on 3 meals a day by end of first week

on to rough mashing by end of 2nd week

by end of first month was on finger food, casseroles the lot .. you really can move much quicker

HTH

pear as a fruit puree on day or so, and always good for later on to ease on bowel movements when they take casseroles and "heavier" foods

Mog, been in the same position myself - ds started solids at 6.5 months. He's not keen on purees though - just wants finger food (has no teeth either). So have been giving him strips of lightly-steamed veggies/fruit like soft pear, banana, peach/bread/bagel/rice cakes. He's even grabbed things like a hot cross bun and devoured it. Am persevering with purees though - the only way he'll open his mouth is if he holds the spoon. hth Dinny

hi mog

dd was exclusively b/f until 6m. this was the most useful info i found about how to wean - all my books were out of date. as others have said you can move through the stages much faster than if you start at around the 4m mark as i did with ds. wish i had waited with him - but the guidance was different then.

stewed apple and pear, then moved on to things like mashed potato, mashed banana (beware leave black stains), very quickly on to things like stew (mashed).

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've tried ds with rusk and bm and he ate that. I'm taking it slowly though. He is still mainly breastfed with max of 2 top up bottles. Did any of you introduce some drinks of water at this stage?

I gave ds banana, which turned out to be a huge mistake as he is allergic to latex (which cross reacts with banana), and he went all puffy.

We started with rice cereal, bananas, and applesauce but soon found out that all can be constipating. If had it to do over again would follow the baby whisperer and do pears first. I think she has a whole section in her book on first foods. Wish I had had it sooner.

Heinz organic oatmeal baby cereal with EBM and pear/apple puree for brekky everday.

purees of yams, carrots, parsnip and butternut squash (apparently the orange veggies are sweeter).

Tried fish, avocado, raw mango and broccoli as well but he's not been keen on that, probably as he is teething.

BEWARE of the Annabel Karmel book as her recipes are out of step with current advice re: eggs etc.

Go easy on baby cereals and bananas as they are terribly constipating.

Pear puree is wonderful - DS takes it every time, even when he's not well. Thawed but still ice cold was great when his top teeth were really urting.

i started to wean at 6 months on baby rice and EBM. Did orange veg like highlander and pears. Introdced each new taste really gradually, mixing it with soemthing he alreday liked. He hasnt moved quickly to human being food though. Is now 10 montsh and wont eat meat or pasta, so only get the veg and potatoe / rice etc bit of our meals. He's not keen on cheese. Will try fish and eggs when he is 12 months ( we have a family history of allergies)
I try to avoid sugar so dont give him rusks or fromage frais.
I woudl like him to eat more variety but he doenst seem to care

baby rice then fruit and veg purees. I just followed Annabel Karmel. Loved it coz she used foods that I hadn't considered. Didn't move onto finger foods particularly until the DTs decided that my feeding them wasn't a good idea.
