I have mastitis
I am taking anti boitics and I am starting to feel a little better

When I went to the doctor I was told that I should express and discard from the sore boob
I should not let gecko feed from that boob as the mik has bugs in it and she will get ill.

I thought this sounded wrong and didn't heed it

Other advice I was given on a thread I started about this before I went to the doctor was to feed as normal from the sore boob to help ease the blockage (as baby feeding will be more effective than expressing) and that the mastitus or anti biotics would not harm gecko

this seemed right to me and I have been doing that
only now I'm paranoid and worried I have done wrong
Please could you tell me what I should be doing and what I can do if I have possibly harmed my baby

I also thought it was bollocks

BabyBaby123 Mon 27-Oct-08 20:39:41

i had mastitis and carried on feeding as dr told me too - baby was (and is!) fine

WhatFreshHellIsThis Mon 27-Oct-08 20:40:10

I had really bad mastitis with DS, fed fed fed fed from the sore boob (OW!) and it really helped.

nickymorris Mon 27-Oct-08 20:40:14

You could also try dangle feeding

popsycal Mon 27-Oct-08 20:40:35

nurofen too
and dont forget to finish anti b
i nearly ended uip in hospital a month ago with it shock

WhatFreshHellIsThis Mon 27-Oct-08 20:41:09

Gecko will get very hot milk for a while, too, until the fever and infection passes! Lovely in this cold weather. smile

MarsLady Mon 27-Oct-08 20:43:01

TR... your doctor is talking out of his/her *%$&

Feed, feed, feed! Drink plenty of fluids and rest.

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 20:44:38

oh no popsycal
dont say that
it has scared me tbh
I didn't realise it was so nasty
I've never had it before

I have breastfed three children for a total time of 3 years and 7 months and never had it

It completely wiped me out
I've neevr known a fever like it
I'm on 500mg of an antibiotic that starts with f 4 times a day
I'm really being careful about making sure I take them AND finish the course (7 days)

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 20:45:41

I'm glad I was right in my thinking

I was sitting there nodding and saying yes discard ,ok

and thinking

WhatFreshHellIsThis Mon 27-Oct-08 20:46:56

it's the worst fever I've ever had, too. but it does pass quickly with anti b's.

hope you feel better soon

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 20:47:09

I tried the dangle feed thing earlier and gecko was laughing more than she was feeding

hunkermunker Mon 27-Oct-08 20:52:18

Oh, you poor thing!

No way should you express and discard - feed with chin pointing towards lumpy bit on boob as that clears it well (ime).

I did dangle-feeding without even knowing it existed as a "thing" when DS2 was 10 days old and I had mastitis! Just seemed the most logical way to feed him with his chin pointing at the lump as it was at the top of my breast. I had to feed him with his feet pointing to my head and all I could see was his earlobes waggling and his chin going up and down as he fed - v odd!

Really hope you're better very soon.

popsycal Mon 27-Oct-08 20:53:37

if niot i,proving in 2 days go back gp
if gets worse go back immediatelt
ice packs really helped getn mine under control
emergency gp sent me home and gave me 4 hours anfd rang me bacvk - double my dose of anti b, sdaid nurofemnn and ice pack - she rang me at 10pm to see if improving or would have admitted me to hospital

be vigilant but dont panic
try the ice

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 20:53:47

thanks hunker
gecko is 20 months now and just thinks its hilarious if I danglew a saggy boob at her grin

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 20:57:32

ok I still have a lump in my breast
I didn;t take paracetemol EXACTLY 4 hours after the last lot and didn't start shaking uncontrollably from the fever which I had been doing on saturday and sunday (before the 4 hours actually but just shook abd clock watched till I could take some more)

I do feel better all round, I was achey and weak as a mouse but thats going now

Do I have to make sure the lump goes quickly aswell

or is that ok just now if I am feeling better and the boob isn't anything like as sore as it was

hunkermunker Mon 27-Oct-08 20:57:35

Yes, DS2 would be similar now! He'd probably grab it and go "HOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!" actually blush grin

hunkermunker Mon 27-Oct-08 20:59:10

Are you taking ibuprofen too?

It sounds like you're on the mend, but you do need to watch the lumpy bit. Less sore is good though!

popsycal Mon 27-Oct-08 21:02:34

i felt like my boob was going to explode i had tons of lumps and it ws red verywhere
sounds as tgough you are on the mend

sorry for typing
ds3 here too

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 21:02:57

I'm not taking ibuprofen because the doctor told me that I shouldn't because it an anti inflamatory and not good for the baby

popsycal Mon 27-Oct-08 21:03:28

nhs direct told me not to take nurofen and i told ghem they were wrobng and nurofen was what was redommended

popsycal Mon 27-Oct-08 21:04:10

an emergency dc told cme that too but you can take it safely apparently

TrinityRhino Mon 27-Oct-08 21:04:47

It was VERY lumpy and VERY red on saturday which is why I went to out of hours doc on sunday

but definitely improved hugely now

one lump and hardly red on the breast at all

<off to get some ice>
I dont have any ibuprofen
