doc says ds has breast milk allergy

i've posted in other sections about my breat fed six month old who for the past three months has had the most horrible mucousy nappies with traces of blood. i've given up dairy wheat soya and eggs but the gastro paed still says its an allergy to food ptoteins in my milk. now he wants my boy to go o n neocate and i'm struggling to get any of it into him - tried bottle, spoon, cup, dad giving it to him, hopeless. the dietician sent me some flavouring sachets for the neocate- full of E numbers and artificial sweetener! she couldn't understand why i didn't want to give it to him. any advice out there? he was given donated breast milk without my consent at birth [tho he was 9lb 13 oz and 41 weeks]and didn't get colustrum as first feed. sorry so long, but worried.

my dd ended up on Nutramigen after she had a problem with my milk and formula (soya and milk-based ones). I had to go back to work when she was v little (around 4 months) and up to that point, she had been v miserable (terrible eczema ,problem nappies etc. - she was fully breastfed at that point).

We gave her nutramigen (like neocate, it tastes foul - I had to stop breastfeeding and go cold turkey until she would take some - she screamed blue murder for around 12 hours and then downed a bottle) and we never looked back. Within 3 days, her eczema had gone and her nappies were normal. I have no idea to this day why she had a problem with my breastmilk - I know she had an allergy to milk and soya at the time but I wasn't eating/drinking food products with those in anyway.

I was terribly worried when I had ds (second child) but I managed to breastfeed him for 6 months and he had no problems with my milk.

ruty, I know what you mean. Because I had to go back to work and there were problems with the breastmilk, I had to do it really (for work reasons more than anything else). If I could have stayed at home then, I doubt I would have managed either! In fact, it was so awful, I made dh stay at home and be with her for a bit because I couldn't bear to hear her screaming.

Does your ds fuss after he's had a feed? Is he your first child?

I'm also afraid that after the sweet tasting breast milk, these formulas taste foul (the neocate, nutramigen type).

ruty - i have not read your other thread on this, so sorry if i've missed something - but if your baby has nucousy nappies with traces of blood, shouldn't you be seeing a different paed? have they checked for other illnesses, or are they just focusing on food?

i'm seeing a paediatric gastroenterologist- thats who gp referred us to - yes they are focussing on food as only cause - worries me a bit.

hi, I have put a message on your other post, it sounds as though we are in very similar situations with our babies. It is really frightening and frustrating and everything that happens or doesnt happen you start to worry about (you are worried about babble, I am worried about play ability.) Most of the time I think that my babe is concentrating so hard on what is happening to him on the inside that he just doesnt have the energy for some the outside stuff that other babies might be doing such as babbling and playing),my babe is growing and I see little developments he is making and I try to just keep focused and do the best I can with him. I didnt force the Neocate I just couldnt do it, it was a choice for us of having the emotional damage of forcing him to take it or having the medical damage that my breast milk might be causing my son. In the end I decided he was growing and that in every other way other than the lactose my milk was the best for him, our current plan is to slowly introduce the formula with food around the 6mth mark (the horrible stuff isnt masked by the food but it is worth a try) and to gently wean him if possible. hth

saacsmum, i ve replied on other post, i'm trying neocate on a spoon at moment - frustratng and slow but may be having an effect..not sure.what's happening with our babies i wonder?

I can't advise you, but apparently I was allergic to breastmilk, too. And this was in the '60s. It seems difficult to believe that a baby could be allergic to its mothers milk but it does happen, as you know!

It's senseless that a good-tasting formula can't be created... poor babies.
