Infant feeding

6/7 weeks - is that too early to express & leave baby for a few hours?

I have been invited out oct. 4th for 2 peoples birthdays but am unsure if it's too soon. Apart from the fact I am going to hate leaving DS, is it too soon to be leaving him and using a bottle? (DS1 was fed EBM for first week but that wasn't optional). I never go out, last time was their birthday last year (!) so am kinda keen to go, but am not sure it's fair on DS yet...

It's really down to how you feel - with all honesty, DS won't be troubled by it unless you are. If you don't feel comfortable then don't do it, but if you really want to go then it might be worth it?

Where are you going, is it somewhere you could get home easily if DS was upset?

Hi there,

IMO it would be good for both of you!

You and any new mum deserves a little break, I went out for a short meal / glass of wine with girlfriends at 6 weeks and had such a nice time, it felt exciting to be out and gave me something to think about in the days before and after except mummyhood!

Your son will still be getting your milk and learning to be adaptable by having it from the bottle. Again IMHO, it's never too early with the bottle, before they get too opinionated! Little tip, (and you may have a bottle you like already from your first), but myself and friends found the "closer to nature" Tommee Tippee bottles got rejected the least as they're quite breastlike.

If you do go hope you have a great time.

I went away for a weekend when dd was 8 weeks (it was my sisters hen do so didn't really have an option!) I expressed like a mad thing from as soon as she was born and got her used to taking a bottle. I missed her like crazy but she was fine

That was when I left DD for the first time. It was with my Mum and I left plenty of EBM and it was fine (although she did drink all the milk, the little greedy guts ).
My top tip - we did a trial run with the EBM and the bottle a few days beforehand. I was upstairs (having a much-needed nap) and my Mum was downstairs babysitting DD for a couple of hours. It gave both of us the confidence that DD would cope.

I have avent and closer to nature bottles. I'll do a trial run first to see if he gets a decent feed from the bottle. Thanks

LoW I think if you're thinking about it and would like to go that kind of shows it's ok. So long as you're comfortable you're in reasonable reach, as someone said.

I had my first night out on Saturday, DS 7 weeks, ebm in fridge and phone on silent throughout show. Was no problem and he was asleep in cot when I got back!! Boobs felt prickly every time someone mentioned him, though.
