Infant feeding

11 month old breastfed weaning to formula but having problems!

Hi - my first post so sorry if long winded!! I have started to wean my 11 month old to formula as he keeps biting me (the little cannibal)!! I started 3 weeks ago introducing (C&G) one bottle then last week 2 bottles - but I am a bit worried as his poo has changed from quite regular firmish poo to very sticky poo (not quite diarrhoea but nearly). Commonsense makes me think his tummy is taking a while to adjust. I spoke to the HV the other day and she advised to maybe try another brand (I tried SMA for the last couple of days and still same poo). Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this - maybe I just need to ride it out until his tummy adjusts or maybe just try cow?s milk (HV advised some people do start before 12 months). However the HV also thought there may be a possibility of a cow?s milk intolerance (oh dear!!). He is showing no other signs - very happy, good skin and sleeping well. Probably just me being paranoid!! I know Apatmil says it is closest to breast milk maybe I should try this or is this their sale?s pitch -don?t want to chop and change him too much! Any advice?

most of the formulas have prebiotics added which can cause runny poo - Cow and Gate and aptamil certainly do. I would give it a few more days with SMA and see if it improves a bit.

when my ds was quite bad with his reflux, i looked quite a bit into signs of milk intolerance.
i think frothy/mucousy poo is a sign of intolerance. any like this? it means it has passed through the gut too quickly.
i think unless there are any other reactions (skin rashes, vomiting, puffiness in face etc), likely to just be adjusting to new milk.
sorry not much help, but might be worth checking with your doctor if you are worried.

we went straight to cow's milk at 10 months with ds1 - not advocating it but he was an elephant, and refused everything except boob, so after spending a week mixing up formula and tipping it down the sink, i chucked it out and bought a gallon of full fat.
we were advised aptamil with dd2, but no idea on the actual science (she was a scbu baby with no suck - ebm for 6 weeks then aptamil)

HIPP organic is a basic milk with no added things you could try that.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Will keep on with the SMA - see how he goes then will be on to cow's milk soon enough. Fingers crossed no intolerence.
