i have blocked ducts again in my right breast(ds3 is 10 weeks old), have been gritting my teeth and trying to get him to feed on that boob, have just hand expressed some milk off both in the shower but my OK boob is absolutely full to bursting - should I
a.do nothing then feed him on that one 1st when he wakes in thenight
b.express using my manual pump and feed off the sore one first in the night
c. try to express some more by hand?

Thanks

When did he go to sleep? I would get out the hot flannels and attempt a dream feed (he may posset some of it back up though but mine never minded).

he went to sleep about 8.30 and usually goes until 4/5 on a good night.
So, should I feed on the OK boob - the left one?

I would express from the ok boob. You are obviously overproducing a bit at the mo- I suffered from this a lot at your stage. You will have enough in your boobs when e next needs a feed and you can pop the ebm in the freezer

I was thinking feed from the blocked boob...attempt to clear it out. I'd be woried about leaving those blocked ducts another 6 hours TBH.

I would use hot compresses on your right boob prior to next feed and massage the lumps when ds is feeding. Pump from left breast now and put baby to right breast when he wakes for feed.

i would try feeding from the blocked one. With the bulging one, I used to have a warm bath and squeeze it out, was always more effective than my expresser.

Depending where the blocked duct is on your boob, it might also help to feed him in a different position e.g. rugby ball. So, if the blockage seems to be near your underarm, the rugby ball hold would mean his chin would be massaging that bit iyswim.

Arrgh....sorry to confuse you! Top tip for blocked ducts is feed from all different positions....cradle, rugby ball, both you and baby lying down but but baby facing your head and feet.

ouch, poor you. I always found that DS was the best remedy for blocked ducts, he was the only one who could effectively clear it. If it were me, I probably would wake him up and try to persuade him to have a go at it (so long as he isn't really grumpy when woken )

Don't do the hot flannels until you are about to feed/express; if you are not going to "use" the blocked boob for a while then put a chilled flannel on it instead to help with the pain.

I did once give up all hope of relief on a blocked boob (even got DH to have a go at sucking - bleugh! but it didn't work more bleugh) and went to sleep and it got a bit better overnight.

Good luck!
I don't personally think that using the other boob will help, as stimulation of that one will increase the let-down and might increase the pressure on the blocked boob - it MIGHT work but it might not and then you're worse off!

Sooo glad someone else mentioned DH sucking...always always called on him to nip blockages in the bud as it were. Worked really well hee....he'svegan so perhaps extra enthusiastic though hehe!

Thank you for all the advice, I got through the night but it was hard - fever - the whole works, but today I've spent the day, either in the warm shower, dangling boobs over ds3's face, massaging, sleeping, drinking loads of water and weeing lots.

Result is that the fever has subsided, still VERY sore and excruciating when he feeds but it is much better when I warm up the breast just before, as then he doesn't suck so hard. I am still feeling rough but a lot better, and dh has been nursing me!

savoy cabbage leaves in your bra may also help with the pain. The darker the leaf the better.
