Infant feeding

Could this be mastitis at 1yr old?

Symptoms are a very painful left breast with a noticable lumpy area, this came on today out of knowhere

But we usually demand feed and today DS didn't have a feed at all until 3pm at which point my breasts were so full, even after he had a huge feed my left breast is so painful and im all flu like, headache, fever, shakey

I did look on kellymom but didn't think mastitis could come on that quickly?

Any ideas?

I get this now and again, sounds like a blocked duct..I can go from feeling pain in my breast to feeling fluey within an hour! I'm guessing DS is sleeping now, the best thing to do would be to get him to feed from that breast lots I think...does he feed in the night?

Yes it could. It happened to me, completely out of the blue when my DS was about 12 months old. See your doctor as soon as possible and get some antibiotics. Mastitis is awful.

He is asleep now, I have fed him from that breast every feed after he emptied them both and its still fricking painful

and my head hurts

this is what you get for going against instincts and not feeding all day so other people don't feel uncomfortable

It's crap isn't it, it makes you feel so awful...have you got a pump? I have pumped when this has happened to me and baby was sleeping. When I got a let down I felt the blockage moving.

You don't expect to have to put up with this after a year do you?

Oh no, purple breasts are never a good sign, are they? You really need some antibiotics, hope you can get in touch with a GP over the bank holiday weekend.

Soory can't help much more, but can offer lots of virtual sympathy

Oh sherby, poor you. The only thing that helped me (i've had it several times) was sleep.

Have you got abs yet?

I was amazed to find myself with early signs just the other day, DS is 25m! I think it's cos his feeding is tailing off and I had a diff bra with a funny seam.

Know what you mean about avoiding other people's embarrassment....crap isn't it?

ouch - yes I can empathise. I fed ds for 7 months and my dd for 1 year and 1week before having my first ever bout of mastitis.

I ended up with suddenly weaning my 1 year old due to landing for 5 days in hospital with IV antibiotics (and painkillers) for the mastitis, hope this does not happen to you. It was hard trying to explain to people in the hospital that my dd was a year and a week old as they kept mis-reading the notes thinking that she was only a week old!

I felt really bad with the mastitis, so yes Sherby you can feel bad with it. Try to get as much rest as possible. Hope you feel better soon.
