Infant feeding

HELP! Don't know if I should stop BFing my 9.5 month old- he won't stop biting me and it's agony!!!

I posted here the other day re my DS's biting and I have tried to alter a few things, eg feed him his dinner earlier so he is hungrier for a milk feed by bedtime, tried to say gently 'no don't bite when you get your milk' and also praised him when he does it without biting. He only ever does it at his bedtime feed.

I am now typing this after being in tears tonight with him biting me so hard (has 3 teeth now so OUCH), tears due to the pain but also because I then put him in his cot and said 'no milk if you are biting' and he WAILED and is still wailing! Plus I am feeling sad that this could be the end of my breastfeeding him?

What do you think I should do? Do you think the biting will continue? Or should I call it quits and give him some EBM or formula? The problem is though that he hated bottles and I haven't even attempted a bottle since he was about 4 months old! ARGH!!!

You poor thing you have my sympathies I know how much it hurts OUCH!!! I'll be watching this with interest. My ds2 is 9 months and has bitten me a few times but not as much as you! Once when he bit me really hard I commented to my mum what he had done and said that if this continues then that would be it with breastfeeding and she said aargh you meanie he loves it!! To which I replied and I just love being bitten! Another time he bit me at the end of a feed and I said OUCH THAT HURT!! Because it did obviously!! At which point ds1 aged 2.11 said naughty Isaac and pushed him in the face making him cry.
I too don't want to stop bf yet I know he's my last and I fed ds1 until he was nearly 16 months with very few nips!

I went through this stage as well but it does pass my dd is 14 months old and still is still bf. She used to bite me and smile! I just took her off the breast each time she did it, did not look at her and then put her on again about a couple of mins later. When she realised she wasn't getting fed she soon stopped - took a few days though. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies, any more comments / advice would be great too! I am going to try to leave his bedtime til even later tonight to see if that helps as he just doesn't seem that tired anymore at 630pm. So my experiment is dinner about 430 5pm then leave bath til about 7pm rather than 6pm so by the time he gets his bedtime milk that will be about 3 hours since dinner. Keep your fingers crossed for me and my nipples!!!

Have a look on the kellymom website, www.kellymom.com there is lots of advice on there to do with biting. Ds went through a phase of biting when teething, although luckily he didn't actually have any teeth then, but it still hurt!
