10 days ago i gave birth to a very little baby (5.9lbs) she has been on th breast for literally hours at a time since, (3hours sometimes more) i have kept going and now 10 days later she is 6.2 lbs, BUT all this feeding has led to mastitis and i have just started antibiotics for it. Thing is they have made her very windy and she seems miserable and unable to sleep, meaning i am holding her to try and keep her asleep when she does as she cannot seem to be lying down. I feel awful thinking that the antibiotics are doing ths to her. The health visitor warned me they could but said under no circs to stop takig them. Can anyone offer me any advice? Also does anyone have experience with this type of long feeding,it doesn't seem common and is frazzling me out completely, thanks in advance!!!

llvster.. dont think long feeding that uncommon (dd was never less than an hour at thst stage)... what antibiotics are you on? co amoxiclav caused meltdown in my dd ...no real advice as I stopped bf for her in the end as it was causing her so much distress (a usually placid baby she was incosolable). What was worse was consultant then told me these antibiiotics were a waset of time ..flucloxacilin apparently best thing as deals specifically with the bacteria that causes mastitis.. so if you not on that could change your antibiotics?

also have you had mw/hv check latch etc to see if feeding ok.. long feed may mean not getting enough first off.

I took antibiotics twice for mastitis and yes they gave dd an exploding arse. Loads more poos and very runny. Didn't do her any harm in the long run and the course of antibiotics is only for about a week.

Not sure about the long feeding though.

i had mastitis twice

i got antibiotics each time but i was a bit unsure about taking them so i threw them in the bin

i fed LOADS to get rid of the mastitis and it worked

i took paracetamol and that kept my temp down

thanks all i am on the flocloxicilin actually, i am very tempted to stop taking it altogether now that the mastitis seems to have calmed down, but i guess i could easily get it again... i wish i hadn't started the course actually. thing is with the long feeding - she feeds for around 3 hours at a time, and she is actually sucking. midwife says latch is ok but i don't reliable she is... Today she has feed constantly from 8 -3 and only slept 2 hours, how can this be normal?
