BOOB MONSTER...HELP!!! 15m.o. is obsessed and my nipps are sore...

I was just over in Parenting posting on what causes tantrums in my toddler, and this is what I described:

"Mine is also pre-verbal, and the only sign he knows is for milk. So, he woke up and did the milk sign fervently. I gave him some boob. When he'd been on boob the for fifteen minutes, cue tantrum because I had to get up and get into the shower to get ready for work.

Whilst in the shower I could hear a tantrum resulting from my mum trying to get him dressed.

Then he was pounding on the door saying "mama, mama", and she told me that he was making the milk sign when he wasn't pounding.

I open the door, and he has a tantrum because I won't pick him up. Then I pick him up and he tries to get my boob into his mouth by pulling and contorting himself until it's there. Then he has a tantrum because I try to sit down to get more comfortable.

This goes on until I get my damn shirt on. I am going to start keeping one on 24/7.

He's 15mo. Someone please tell me the boob-all-of-the-time phase will end soon.

Please?"

Some very helpful mum there suggested that I take the problem here. I work M-F, 9-5, so it may be his way to reconnect. Has anyone else dealt with this, and does it end soon, or is there anything I can do to ameliorate?

Thanks in advance.

Hi RoRo, i actually taught my son (12 mo) the sign for 'milk has finished', and he has used it on occasion and then trotted off to play...for about 2 minutes...then he is back at me whinging and moaning until i feed him again...sigh...i also use this sign when i don't want to feed him with partial success

it seems like he is obsessed with me and it send him into a delusion of some sort...it feels like i am this big chocolate bar walking around the house and he is constantly, desperatley after a bite....its has sent my stress levels to an alltime high, i cannot relax in my own home, i have two other children to give time too...which i feel bad and guilty about....

then he has always been a very demanding baby, it started with crying constantly in the car, would not be put down anywhere without crying, God knows i tried, he would not take a dummy until i tried for 6 months but then he didn't love to suck it, he hated his Amby hammock, and eventually we only used it for naps at around 4 months old when he finally would sleep in it, but would not ever go the night in it, always had to be at my side in bed...any outing outside the house would end in tears as i knew he would kick off some time or the other....

anyway must go, ds2 has just woken from his nap so i will be paralysed once again...plan is to feed him or cuddle now and then no more until bed...i'll keep you posted..please share your experience...

RoRo: I decided to cut down on DS's feeds at around that age (my decision not his). He wasn't feeding during the day anyway when I was at work, so stopped all feeds but first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. The dropped morning feed as he was on for ages! After a few days he was fine with it, though if I'm in the bath he'll pat my boobs and will stick his hand down my top if he's on my knee. I think I just said 'milk is for night time / bed time' and stopped feeding on demand. I think it;s perfectly reasonable to get a balance both of you are comfortable with at this age .

Hi Roromommy,
I read your post with interest as I was going to post something similiar.
I have an 18 month old who is OBSESSED with the boob and tried to pull them out in the most embarrassing situations - like th supermarket.
I give her a feed in the morning and at night and I'm reluctant to give it up but I'm not sure it's fair on DD to expect to understand that sometime she can have the boob and sometimes she can't. She looks quite confused at times.
I did manage to get her off the boob throughout the night and all day by wearing a sports bra which is hard to get little roaming hands into and by getting dressed quickly after her morning feed.
I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on how to contine one feed without having a child tugging at your top all day long.
Good luck.

Hi, my 14 month old is a bit of a boob monster as well. He has started saying "BOOB" and pulling down at my top (luckily it sounds more like "BBBBBB", so I can get away with it in public for a short while I think!!). I work 4 days a week and we are down to Morning/Evening (and through the night unfortunately as well...). He tends to become more obsessed when he is tired, hungry, teething or feeling unwell and wants some cuddles more than anything else I think. I reckon he also wants to make up for the fact there is no milk available for him during the week when he is at nursery.

It can be quite draining - especially in the morning when you are trying to have a relaxing shower and get ready for work. Having a screaming toddler banging on the door or hanging onto your legs can get a bit annoying!
