Infant feeding

Are they trying to sell us breastfeeding, like you need equipment?

Sorry if I am being overly cynical but alongside the 'bottlefeeding solutions' kit on offer at Boots, there is this

It looks like such a horrid money making ploy

Obviously many of us who breastfeed don't generate enough potential income opportunities for the big companies

This is going to put people off . 'Oh I was going to, but look what you need!'

Yes,it's fucking ridiculous.I agree totally.
Were you not around on MN when they tried to foist the Avent breastfeeding and lifestyle expert on us then?

It didn't go down quite as Avent had hoped.

It was very very funny.
Earlier still, they tried to get an Aptamil breastfeeding helpline on the home page.

That disappeared too.

what a load of bollocks. and quite cynical too - given UK bfing rates past initial few weeks. Would have thought the only "essential" on that list was the washable breast pads.

Panda boobs describes it well

I never even needed breastpads.

Just lots of Champers.

To keep my strength up.

What a crude marketing ploy. Complete bollocks, as if you need all of that.
I had a couple of bras, lots of breastpads (needed massively by me). Also had a hand held pump for expressing, though that was a bit pointless as dd never took to a bottle of EBM.

"The Breastfeeding Solutions Set gives you all you need to breastfeed comfortably and successfully in one convenient pack."

What, like a pair of boobs?

Report
Fllight · 23/04/2008 19:52

Let's hope they aren't trying to market it to third world aid organisations.

The whole point of Bfing is surely that it's free, healthy and you can do it anywhere?

All you need are boobs, breast pads and in my case, lots of muslins to mop up dribbled goo.

What a crude money making ploy, Do you think it might be designed to scare people into ff?

Report
MamaChris · 23/04/2008 21:05

doesn't contain anything I need to bf - boobs and chocolate perhaps cadburys should consider a postnatal/bf support kit

I think it would have scared me when pregnant into "omg - am I really going to need all that?" as one of the pros of bf for me was convenience. it wouldn't have scared me into ff, but they may well have made money from me.

What's a breast shell??

Report
MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 21:27

oh yes

moondog is quite right
I was very scathing

Someone did suggest that the manufacturer's 'ideal mother' was one who wanted to bf so bought the bf kit... then failed at bf so had to buy the ff kit. I thought that was probably true and very sad.

MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 21:28

nellie it's like a plastic er, boob-shaped thing that catches the drips when you leak so you can store them with expressed milk, rtaher than just absorbing them like pads

francagoestohollywood · 23/04/2008 21:40

never used breastpads either. And not even a nursing bra (second time around). I did use an electric pump when dd was sick and was quite impressed.

BouncingTurtle · 23/04/2008 21:41

So what would you consider necessary in a breastfeeding kit?

Personally I would have the following

a) A decent nursing bra
b) Breastpads
c) some Muslims
d) a very large block of Dairy Milk
e) A very large M&S chocolate cake.

Report
BouncingTurtle · 23/04/2008 21:42

Err c) should have been Muslins, obviously

But then again they could be useful if they declare a Fatwa on anyone who dared to disapprove of your breastfeeding in public...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 23/04/2008 21:44

Doesn't the Koran say to breastfeed until 3? So Muslims could be pretty useful to have around.

Yes, the Prophet was very pro-bfing. Great man, IMO.

This sort of thing really pisses me off - adding to the general 'atmosphere' around bf as it being something difficult-to-unattainable. Love, too, the way it's called Breastfeeding 'Solutions'. Implying Breastfeeding Problems needing Solutions.

Are 'nipple protectors' nipple shields?

My kit would have:

  • dark chocolate of the best quality
  • sex and the city dvds
  • set of friends to keep me company
  • a chef, yes, that'd be a great idea.
