Infant feeding

Baby seems to be in pain after feeding

My gorgeous little 3 week old, is really suffering with wind, have tried infacol but doesn't seem to be helping that much. It seems worse through the night time, and he can't be put down in his moses basket even though we tilt it so he is raised. He brings back more milk during the evening and night. He seems to be in discomfort, he appears to double up in pain. He also sneezes quite a bit and is really snuffly during the night! Any ideas? Plus what foods do I need to avoid when breastfeeding.

we had this and it was horrid i feel for you. we had bottles of infacol in every room. we laid her across our knees and rubbed her back. used infacol before feeds. lots of warmth and cuddles. avoided spicey/garlicy foods but no idea if it helped. it does pass aftera few weeks i thunk - she was colcky from around 6 until bedtime (mine) every day. but it does pass - ask HV for advice if she is nice

I think there is something you can buy at boots pharmacy (not off the shelf) that is better than Infacol? I didn't try it but I know from chat with other Mums that it really helped with colic? Maybe someone with more experience knows the name of it - if not just go and ask at the Pharmacy. Big sympathy.

loopy, is he happier when held in your arms, close to or on the breast?

Hi loopy

We used colief, and it saved my life - and certainly my marriage. It is a natural enzyme which helps the little one break down the milk they are taking more easily. DS2 used to scream, horrifically, from 20 mins after each feed, for up to 2 hours from 4 weeks old to 26 weeks! Four drops of colief before the feed and he was a different child. It's a bit of a fuss to use, and expensive, but can be obtained on prescription.

However, Tiktok is the expert here and may be able to identify any other problems for you to investigate first.

my 4 week old has had similar and i found infacol didn't help
we have had 2 sessions of cranial osteopathy which has helped as well as lots of love and cuddles to help her through it. i got a few good moves from baby yoga/ baby massage to help wind.
if you are in london or manchester there is a charity which gives subsidised osteo sessions. i would def try this
good luck - after just one week of the above things are better for us so hang in there

Hi, my DD (8 weeks) is like this during the day and evening altho thankfully she seems more peaceful during the night (12-6).

Have tried cranial but am not convinced it helped. Two things do seem to help her digestion (not much use at night I'm afraid but might help stop the gas building up during the day?)-

  • kicking on mat with no nappy (lots of farting!)

  • being carried around in front carrier: being upright seems to help her hold the milk down and the movement seems to help her 'self wind' while I can get on with other stuff.

If it is any consolatiion my other DD was exactly the same and grew out of it after a few months when she could roll around and work out her gas more easily.

tiktok, he calms down a little bit when he is in my arms, but is still very cranky and seems in pain, panting and fidgeting kicking out legs.
Bought some Colief today, but I can't express more than a tea spoonful, and on the instructions it says you need to express a few tablespoons! I'd be lucky, so why can't you give colief as it comes?

Hi all, i have a 6 week old, and he seems too be really struggling after his feeds, tensing up and stretching himself as though he is trying too squeeze something out with no luck. We have used infacol, but have read this can cause more problems with wind so have stopped using it. We changed his milk to cow and gate comfort. Are using gripe water but still nothing helps. Anyone else going through this?
