am giving up

dd is 2 and a bit

I have a prescription long-term for Fluconazole which my doc says is present in breast milk though there have been no studies to say whether or not this is a bad thing

dh thinks it's time to stop - tbh the only reason I am carrying on is because it is nice to watch her fall asleep, it's the only way to get an afternoon nap out of her and she is so snuggly when she falls asleep on me

anyway. Must be done. Would be selfish surely to pump her full of fluconazole just because I want her to sleep in the afternoons

dh is being v supportive and says he will get her up in the mornings and put her to bed with warm milk at nights

but I am a bit sad even though I do think it is time. Any suggestions a) how to make it easier for her and b) how to get her to sleep without it (dunno if this is possible) and, if it all goes wrong, anyone know if Fluconazole is really v dangerous if she does have the odd feed?

I think the bfn says its fine with bf, I got their thrush leaflets. something about being below the amount that chidren could take themselves.

here

Fluconazole is not licensed to be given to lactating women. Practitioners are required to take full liability for use. The amount that gets through in breastmilk is 0.6mg/kg/day. The amount which could be given to the baby within the licence is 6mg/kg/day (Hale). Studies on the use in premature babies weighing under 1000g have demonstrated successful outcomes (Kaufman). The dose of fluconazole is 150-300mg as a loading dose followed by 50-100mg twice daily for at least ten days (Hale, Amir). The World Health Organisation recognises fluconazole as compatible with breastfeeding (WHO).

oh I love mumsnet

alex that is great info, I don't mind giving up most feeds but just the afternoon nap feed I could keep going by the looks of that

She is 2 so much bigger than a prem baby!

You are a complete star

I've taken fluconazole twice when breastfeeding with full support of midwives,GPs and HVs.Worked a trreat. Certainly doesn't mean you have to give up.

I'll link you to Breastfeeding Newtwoek.

yes moondog it is, it has the same info that alex gave, thank you

I have taken it a couple of times as a one-off but my latest prescription is for a 3-month period so I felt a bit more uncomfortable about exposing her to something over that period of time

to be fair I had only intended to continue till she was 2, so this is more of a wake-up call than anything else

it's just the afternoon nap I was concerned with but if I can carry on with the one feed for that maybe 4 or 5 times a week that's not too bad
