Hi all,

Just wanted a bit of advise regarding baby latching on, I have been expressing my milk and bottle feeding but I'd really like to get baby to latch on and express for evening feeds so my partner can also feed, any ideas on how to get baby to latch on? And also at 4 weeks old is this too late to start breast feeding rather than pumping ? Tia x

Start by hand expressing until you feel the let down. When it starts to drip, put baby under your boob and brush the nipple against his cheek, he should turn towards your nipple and gape. Drip a couple of drops in his mouth. Make sure he has the full nipple in his mouth including the areola. Good luck.

Thankyou for your reply, do you think 4 weeks is too late to start? Xx

It depends on the Baby, some take to it very easily but they suck very differently on the breast and its harder work.

Definitely not too late! Can you get to a local breastfeeding support group? Your health visitor will be able to advise. I had a baby in nicu and I pumped to tube feed him. He was a couple of weeks old when he first got a go of the breast and with some guidance it was absolutely fine (and such a welcome break from pumping!) Youre doing great though- but don't be afraid to seek out some expert help.

I'd agree it's not too late. Also agree to getting support from a breast feeding support group. While you're looking into that I found Kelly mom an invaluable website.

Definitely not too late. Some proper face to face support would really help as someone will be able to check your latch.

Do you have a Children’s Centre near you? They may have a breastfeeding support group or someone that can come out to your home.
