Infant feeding

10month old doesn't want breakfast

Hi all. Just wondered if anyone had a similar experience or could offer suggestions.

My 10month old sleeps through from 7.30-7.30 without night feeds.

On waking I give her a breast feed on both sides but often she only has a few minutes rather than what I would consider a full feed. Having slept through I don't understand why she isn't starving!

I then try breakfast an hour later but she really has no interest in it. She'll nibble a bit on banana or toast and have a mouthful or two of porridge or cereal but no real quantity.

She is then ready for a nap between 9.30-10. Although I try to put her down without feeding her she is usually hungry and won't go down without milk (presumably because she didn't have that full feed on waking!).

The health visitor has suggested not breast feeding her before the nap thinking that she's not eating breakfast because she knows she'll get milk and that by not breast feeding her she'll soon eat. I've tried this but the result is just that she doesn't eat breakfast and then won't sleep from hunger.

Has anyone had this? I'm starting to think I just need to follow her lead and that right now she really wants/needs milk more and will eventually come round to breakfast. Other meals are fine. Thanks in advance!!

Try breakfast later, when she is hungry? My DD often isn't hungry when she gets up at 7 but will happily eat breakfast at 9.

Thanks. I've tried that already though unfortunately and she then gets too tired and ready for morning nap so refuses to eat

I don't agree that a 10 month old can "know" there will be milk later and deliberately not eat breakfast Hmm in my experience DS eats what he wants, when he wants. Some mornings he seems hardly hungry for food or milk, some mornings he prefers food and some mornings milk, some mornings hoovers up anything and everything! It makes sense to me, I don't always feel like eating a full breakfast each day, and some days I feel much hungrier than usual. We're humans not robots Grin

I'd go with her timings and give a feed before nap. You could either leave things as they are before that (bit of milk, bit of breakfast) or stop the morning feed and do breakfast then 9:30 feed. You can always offer more solids later in the day. I don't see it matters when she eats as long as over the day she eats what she needs and her weight gain is fine. She's only little anyway.

Have you tried not giving her the first feed when she wakes up and just offering breakfast instead? Then she can have milk before her nap. Don't fret too much, their eating habits change so much.

I have tried not giving her a bf when she wakes but she's desperate for some milk on waking so cries and refuses solids if I try solids first.

I think I've tried every combination/order going and so many different foods for breakfast that I can only really conclude that she's just not ready for solids at breakfast yet!
