Infant feeding

Older baby Weaning very distressed!

I'm trying to cut out the daytime feeds initially for my 17 month old DD. She's asking for breastmilk constantly through the day and I want to probably start happily taking antidepressants (if that's not a contradiction in terms) at some point in the future.
I started yesterday and it was ok, I managed to distract her whenever she asked but today she is very distressed and has cracked lips. She will take small amounts of water from a cup. I've tried offering it to her from different cups and 'grown up' glasses but she is not interested. She only drinks water and hates milk or juice.
Any tips?

Berrie - the anti-depressant called SERTRALINE (or Zoloft) is safe when bf. You can ask your GP to prescribe it, look it up on kellymom.com which has a list of safe AD's.

She may be sick, teething or going through a developmental change, etc if she is "constantly" asking for bf. My son does this still when he has a cold (he is 2.8 years). This is very normal behaviour for a toddler.

You don't need to stop bf to take these tablets. Of course if you wish to stop for other reasons, that's fine.

Actually I have a box of Sertraline that I am meant to be taking but I am so reluctant to. I don't really want to stop breast feeding truth be told though the constant pestering is begining to irriate me! She has been ill recently and it seems to have carried on from then. Thanks though!

Berrie - just a suggestion - I can totally sympathaise with how worried you are about meds. going into your bm and into your child.

When you are dealing with your own emotional/pschological issues just remember that bf can calm you (hormones) and help YOU emotionally as much as it is helping your child. I have been taking sleeping tablets for the past week (I had a very traumatic experience which triggered severe insominia), but have not given up bf my son who is now 2.8 yo. The meds. are considered moderatley safe and I only bf around 12 hours after taking them (i.e when my son wakes up in the morning). Most meds. leave your blood stream after a few hours.

I know that giving up because of my meds. will not help me with the stress I am going through, nor will it help my son who loves mummy milk and the comfort of being in mummy's arms.

Good luck with whatever you decide though, I hope you don't mind me talking about my own experiences

Not at all, thanks for your thoughts. Sorry about whatever you've suffered.
I do feel that the bf hormones help me but it's not really a long term solution.
