Infant feeding

9 month old biting whilst bf

Hi,

My 9 month old DD has recently restarted biting whilst bf. She was doing this before at around 6 months when she first started teething and I tried to get it to stop then, but once her teeth came through it stopped.

She now has 4 lovely sharp teeth on top and bottom and keeps biting whilst feeding. I've tried pulling her towards me but she just bites harder. I pretty much give a loud yelp everytime, she's even started crying because of it on a few occasions but it doesn't seem to stop her from doing it again. I wanted to wean her off bf slowly but I'm starting to dread feeding because of the biting.

Can anyone help?

Ouch that sounds painful!

This worked with my two: as soon as the baby bites unlatch her and move away, communicating that if she bites breast ending is over. Re-latch a short while latter.

Pull her right in so her nose is buried in your breast and she has to open her mouth (and unlatch) to breathe. It's quicker than any other way of unlatching.

I would also stop feeding for a little and say something with a stern face and tone of voice - she won't get the words but she will probably get the tone.

And with mine, three nips meant the end of the feed - only had to that once with each of them.

Thanks so much, will try these out. Really want to continue breastfeeding without the pain!
