Hi my 3rd baby is a day old and my nipples already hurt! Is this normal? He appears to be latching on well and is content between feeds. I think I am expecting too much for it to be totally pain free, what do you think? Thanks

Thanks for your help. I think I will get his latch checked as at the moment it is a pain free feed so something must be wrong when it does hurt.

How were your other babies at the beginning?

I know my mum had quite bad pain with all hers at the beginning. I had some soreness/discomfort at first with my first, but my second was actually painful and pretty quickly did some nipple damage (although the baby was happy/gaining) and it turned out there was a fairly big tongue tie.

Hi I've had pretty much the same experience as you. No. 1 was sore at the start of feeds for about 4 weeks but no. 2 was a nightmare, I had two bouts of thrush and two bouts of mastitis in the first 4 weeks and he also destroyed one nipple which still has a chunk missing. I think that is why I am so worried this time. Some feeds are pain free after a few seconds so I think I need to get someone to check his latch as he must get it wrong other times. Thanks for your support.

I'd recommend getting his latch checked for peace of mind too. I found the first 6 weeks or so painful for the initial latch but it did get easier. I found the Laniosh (spelling!) purple nipple cream amazing and you don't need to take it off... It's pricey but a little goes a long way. Also plunging my nipples into a really cold cup of water for a minute or so helped lots too.
