Freezing EBM

Hi,
This may sound like a stupid question but how do you store EBM in the freezer? I know you can store it in sterilised bottles or special breastmilk bags, but can you store it in normal freezer bags? If so, do you need to sterilise them first? Even if new? It seems rather expensive to purchase special bags for EBM - is the benefit just the scale on the bags?
Can you freeze it in ice cube trays and then store in bags?
Apologies if this is obvious, but I worry about doing something wrong and making my baby ill.
Thanks!

Hi, not sure about the answer to your question, but you can get cheap breast milk freezing bags from Home and Bargain, about £2 I think.

Hope that helps

My midwife said ice cube trays are a good Idea, and they will defrost quicker!

Well whatever you use it must be sterilized, the special bags are per sterilized and have measurements on the side so you know how much is in there.

I use the bags as they're pre sterilised it's much easier you get loads in a pack Smile

Boots sell pre sterilised milk bags that can be used in the freezer. Please don't use an ice cube tray, a) the milk can get freezer burn (where the freezer robs it of moisture), b) they aren't sterile, & c) some ice cube trays contain BPA apparently.

Proper milk bags much better IMHO. If you're going to the trouble of expressing & freezing the milk, why would you risk it not being as safe & perfect as possible?

Boots' bags are fine but price has just gone up. Ditto home bargains suggestion. Alternatively why not buy some containers designed for sterilisation and reuse, Avent sell some. They fit with an Avent pump but can be used independently. Normal food bags not strong or sterile enough in my opinion. If using bags don't forget to try to remove as much air from bag as possible, and freeze lying flat as most space efficient. Good luck!
