hi, ds has had reflux and is usually quite sick after feeds. have been given infant gaviscon, but ds is taking ages to drink from the bottle. yesterday 4oz over 4 hours Confused

is this normal? he usually does 4oz in 20 mins. he is sucking and sucking but not swallowing and when i tip the bottle up no milk has gone.

he has seemed very frustrated so i just gave him a bf and he has immediately spewed the lot all over the place.

Is the gaviscon making the milk too thick to go thru the teat? I don't know what to do to feed him.

Any help appreciated. cheers

If you are BFing you can make the Gaviscon up with a little bm or cooled boiled water and syringe/cup/spoon it in either before or after you offer your breast. This used to work really well with DD.

Meant to say, you only need 15ml of fluid per sachet if you aren't putting it in the feed.

You need a much faster and larger teat if you are feeding expressed bm in a bottle wirh gaviscon. We used the size 2 or 3 tommee tippee teats when dd was 0-3 months. Helped a lot! I was exclusively expressing at the same time anyway though.

Thanks. i didn't realise i would need a faster teat. atm we use tommee tippee for expressed milk and formula feeds.

i will try as a paste till i can get to the shops.

thanks

The one time I used gaviscon in expressed milk it didn't seem to dissolve like it does in formula and the teat got clogged. This happens occasionally in formula for me too though very rarely after switching to the size 2 tommee tippee teats at around 3 months. I bought them separately from the bottles, in boots.

Yes, if you have the wide neck tommee tippee bottles you can buy size 2 or 3 teats from boots or mothercare which will fit on the same bottles.

Is easivent the one with an x on the lid?

I used to do what Anita has suggested.

You can also give it through syringes that you can either ask pharmacist for or buy over the counter. I mix it in a sterilised container with EBM or cooled boiled water and then put mix in syringe and slowly squirt into babies cheek towards the back of throat. It gets easier with practice.
