FF baby sick after nearly every feed?? Formula advice?

5 week old LO was on Aptamil and suffered terrible colicky symptoms. Hours of crying and excruciating pain usually an hour after feeds. Also suffering with reflux and was prescribed baby Gaviscon.

So I decided to try a different formula and switched to HIPP organic. She is infinitely better no colicky symptoms which is wonderful. However, she is now sick after almost every feed. It's only 48 hours since the change so I will give it a bit more time. But wondering if there is anything I can get to help with the sickness or if I should try another formula in a few days time.

What other formulas might be worth trying? I tried Aptamil comfort for one feed a few weeks ago but she was horrifically poorly from it and cried 3 hours solid so I switched back immediately to regular Aptamil.

I have heard Cow and Gate and Aptamil are one in the same and that SMA can be particularly bad for wind. I know it's horses for courses but what else is out there that might be worth a try?

P.s. still using Gaviscon. I may try dropping it in due course as she is so much better apart from the sick but wonder if it would make the sick worse and not sure if reflux is better from Gaviscon (as it was better with Aptamil and Gaviscon) or whether the new feed has improved it. I might drop it in due course but assuming sick might be worse if I did....

are you absolutely sure that you are not not over feeding, coaxing her to finish last half-ounce, doing the 'twist' ? It's terribly easy to fall into this trap ;this is what I mean

Could it be a cows milk protein problem? DS has issues with it and pukes if ingested. It's pretty common & accounts for 50% of reflux in babies.

My daughter used to do this. I used Dr Brown bottles and Dentinox in her milk. She stopped throwing up.

Def not pushing her to finish as we had been working on basis of reflux previously so been v careful not to over feed. She usually does it if she's had a 40ml/90ml or a rare 120ml feed so it's fairly random.

I agree re cows milk idea seriously it could certainly be a route to check out. I do 1-2 EBF feeds per day so going to just check what she's doing around those. With the aptamil problems she still suffered from colicky symptoms with ebf but now they've gone I'll check whether we're getting sickies with EBF too...

Thanks Marzipan. I'm using Dr Brown but not the drops as she's on Gaviscon and not sure about mixing it with other medicines. But will definitely ask GP and see what happens...

She will probably still puke with BFing if it is cows milk issues though may be not as badly. I've had to cut dairy & soy (proteins are similar) out completely as BFing.

No, your're right. Prob best not to mix medicines. Confuse her little tummy even more.

When you say sick, do you mean throwing up entire feed?

My ds is on SMA staydown for his reflux. He still brings a little of this up from time to time (ironically [hwink]). But it's not anywhere near as much as he was bringing up with hipp and aptamil. He's not wretching or bringing up stomach acid anymore, nor is he screaming constantly so I can live with the extra laundry.

If its not major vomitting and your lo isn't acting like they were before gaviscon then I personally wouldn't worry.

I had the same problem with ds. He wasmuch better on normal sma gold. It did make his poo green at first but it's normal again now and we had tried everything including gavi scon and comfort formulas.

We also found putting books underneath the Moses basket at the head end (underneath the stand feet) helped a little.

Hope something works. I remember how awful it is :(

Ahh my DD did this. I just cleaned her up although night feeds were a pain. I used a reflux wedge pillow to help keep it down.

I took her to the docs at 8 weeks and was told that it was quite normal and she would gradually keep more and more down. Their stomach valve is still quite weak. It had improved greatly by she was three/four months.

Also I found all the comfort and stay down formulas gave her terrible constipation and wind!

My dd was quite sicky for the first few months. If she's enjoying her milk now that seems really positive. As long as she's putting on weight and not distressed, I don't think you've much to worry about.

Thanks for the info on SMA - if I change again I may give it a go.

Wondering about dropping the gav and trying colief for lactose intolerance too.

Also great info re just waiting it out til Tim more mature.

Only major other rob is I keep her upright for 30 mins or more after a feed but at night she has been sick in her sleep which is quite scary we have raised the cot at head end but might try a bit higher.

We keep DS upright for 30 mins after feeds & his cot is elevated at one end by about 20 degrees. It definitely helps. I've tried putting him down before the half an hour bit he vomits in his sleep. Makes night feeds pretty long & tiring but you get used to it.

When he was a newborn I tilted him on his side a bit & supported him with a rolled cellular blanket under his bum. If he was sick it would then come out.

Thanks seriously. My HV recommended 20 mins but might try 30 and see of any improvement. I'd say we're about 20 degrees too but she's still sick after input her down fairly often

You could try an anti reflux formula but that would be instead of the gaviscon . Gaviscon is meant to help prevent large amounts coming back and also contains a mild antacid. There are stronger anti sickness meds but as your lo is only bringing back small amounts I would not go there. Bringing back a little milk is not a real problem just messy !

Aptamil anti reflux is only available from boots I think .

We decided to stick with gaviscon but different things work for different babies.

We also did cranial osteopathy for Los reflux and I think that helped too !
