How do you know which formula to use for ebf baby?

Hi

Just wondering how you picked which formula to use. I am currently using cartons, as my daughter is breastfed, but has one formula feed a day, as I am unable to express enough when I return to work. She is 9 weeks old. I just wanted to get her tummy use to it in preparation for my return to work.

There are basically 4 ready made carton options on sale. Organix, aptamil, sma and cow and gate.

Ive tried her on sma and so far so good......she is sick a bit more though. She was never a sicky baby....is this normal is what i am trying to say, or should i look at changing the brand to one of the others?

Ie: is a bit of sick a bad reaction to formula or normal....how do you know when it doesnt agree with them?

My DD was sick on aptimal but not cow and gate.

A friend's baby is FF and she was on SMA and sick a lot, and the doctor said it was something to do with SMA particles being too big or something..... don't know first hand though.

DS was EBF until 16 weeks, we then slowly introduced formula. We use aptimil, powdered and cartons. He is no more sicky than he was on BM.

Every baby is different though. If you think the formula doesn't agree with them try switching to a different one, see if there is a difference.

I have been told (by a MW) that aptimil is the closest to BM in formulation, but I don;t know if thats true or not.

I use Aptamil. Witht he normal one she was fine from day one. She then took a few days to get used to the hypoallergenic one - she wasn't sick it was more spit-ups. I spoke to the paediatrician and she reminded me that although it looked a lot for me in fact it was no more than about 5ml of a 120ml feed. Apparently the hypoallergenic one is slightly harder for them to handle at the beginning.

If she is a bit sick, sometimes it has bits in it, should I not bother to change?

She is sick after i have fed her a bit, but its almost like she is getting too much. Im not sure if it is the formula that is making her sick?

If it was the formula surely she would be mega mega sick?

Sometimes they drink too much and spit up what they don't need. Will have to wait for a better sick expert to come along though as I had a very easy ride as far as that was concerned.

But yes I think if the formula wasn't good for her she would be really sick and possibly have a bad tummy.

I went for cow and gate, but only because a friend did, no special reason. Cow and gate is the same as aptimil btw. Hipp organic tasted like wet cardboard to me and dd refused it (came as a tescos substitution once). I have also heard people say that the readymade cartons sometimes upset tummies more than the powder - but dd happy either way so I don't have any evidence for that.

If you are still expressing but just can't get enough for a full feed you can always make a 'shandy' - half ff half ebm - I did this for quite a while and its handy as cold expressed milk from the fridge/freezer into 70 degree formula gets it close to the right temp quickly. HTH

Milkjetmum - out of interest, I phoned the makers of Aptimil and got told the opposite to you. They told me that the readymade cartons are easier for a baby to digest (can't remember why but they did explain) and therefore less likely to cause upset tummies.
