DDis 15 weeks old ( 4 weeks corrected)

  1. How and when do you prepare the bottle.....i am demand feeding and DD is unpredictable, i dont have time to wait the 30min etc after the kettle has boiled as by then she is hysterical.
  2. She doesnt get any milk from a bottle, she doesnt know what to do. We use a medala calma teet for her meds in 20ml expressed milk, but thats hard work and needs same technique as BF so she wont take more than 2oz and wants to go the breast.

Any tips and advice

You can make up the bottle with water straight from the kettle and then leave it in a bowl of water to cool to the correct temperature - it will be cool in 5 minutes or so (but check first!)

Do you add the formula before or after the water is cooled??

You have to add the powder to hot water (above 70c) as it can contain salmonella or enterobacter bacteria which needs to be destroyed with high temps. Best to leave the water to cool a little from boiling as boiling water can destroy some of the vitamins in formula.

A litre of water boiled and left in the kettle for 30minutes is around 70 degrees, so this is the longest you can leave it. It might be worth getting a thermometer and playing a round a bit to see how fast your kettle cools. Between 70-80degrees is the ideal temp for adding the powder - this is what hospitals feeding units do when making up formula for babies.

Before! The whole point of using hot water is to sterilise the formula powder. The hotter the better. The only reason for the the nonsense about letting the water cool for 30 minutes is because the formula companies don't want to be sued by idiots who might scald either themselves or their babies.

It's really simple:

  1. Boil kettle
  2. Poor hot water into bottle
  3. Add formula and screw on cap
  4. Shake
  5. Put water in bowl/sink/jug of cold water
  6. Wait 5 minutes, shake bottle again and check temp on wrist the usual way

What do you do when you are out? Do you take a flask?

Sorry didn't realise, I also make up a bottle, cool it, keep it cool, then re-heat. I do know a lot of people who use flask, you can get a Tommee Tippee flask, that also doubles up as a bottle warmer, its about £12. I'm assuming you take the water in the flask, then take the formula in a dispenser, then make up on the go.
