It hurts! After a very difficult bf start with DS I don't want this to spell the end of our bf (I had to stop bf my DD at 13.5m when I was 4m pregnant as it hurt too much).

DS is not the best sleeper (wakes 4,5,6+ times a night) I am back at work fulltime and feeding is the only (quick, quiet) way to get him back to sleep in the middle of the night - but now it hurts...

I have tried different position.. cradle, rugbyball and upright, it is slightly better when we are lying down (we co-sleep after first waking once we have gone to bed) and he is very sleepy but the pain still stops me from sleeping while he feeds.

I have tried talking to him, unlatching and trying to get his mouth wider, but he's never been that good at really wide latches - part of our problem at the start.

My DH is being really good, hand-holding at night and trying to settle him when I can't do it anymore, but this only works about 50% of the time, otherwise I just have a break then feed him to sleep 30mins+ later. He's also being v tolerant of my shouting/crying/stressy/fustration at it all... we're both so tired and I really hate the way I am behaving towards them, but I digress..

It's cathartic just writing it down, I am not expecting any quick-fix solutions, but can anyway give any advice or failing that some tea/cake/matchsticks.... thanks

Hi

my son did this when he first got his teeth. I think he was just feeling his new teeth and learning how to use them if that makes sence!

I would take him off and show him the makes by pointing to them and say " Oohhch Your teeth hurt mummy" then point to his teeth.

I dont know if that helped or if he just grow out of it but it only lasted a month before he got the hang of sucking without using his teeth.

Hang in there it does get better Smile

Are they 'new' teeth? Or are there any new teeth (not necessarily the ones leaving the mark?)

I've found with DD that whenever a new tooth is coming in we get a poor latch for a couple of days, I'm guessing it's whilst she gets used to the feel of them in her mouth? Always passes after a couple of days - a week at most.

Thanks Wanttofly and MrsK, I'm glad it's not just me and encouraging that it might only last a couple of days/week Smile . It's interesting you try and talk to baby and explain it hurts too - I thought I was being a bit mad there Wink

The marks are from his 2 top teeth, they aren't that new, he's had them at least a 6 weeks, but maybe there are more on the move in there.

Am going to stick it out til next week and see what happens, meanwhile getting DH to finish settling him to sleep when it gets too ow-ey. Thanks!
