Just wondered if anyone has any tips for increasing my readership. I am writing a new and often politically topical post almost every week, posting it on Mumsnet but am not yet receiving any Mumsnet Traffic yet. I receive approx 1,000 page views a month from other sources (fb, twitter etc) but am obviously not making the most of Mumsnet. Does anyone have any pointers?

Hi lifeafterdebt,

You might find this page - about how to use social media including Mumsnet to promote your blog - useful. Engaging with Mumsnet bloggers on Twitter and Facebook, as well as our forum, can be a good way to get going.

Ok forgive me for being blunt here, but you need to post more - once a week is not enough - try to post around 4 to 5 times a week. I've been blogging for a month now- I post six times a week and have 2,500 page views a week which includes a lot of return traffic, as people like to check in every day to see updates.

If you do this you should also see an increase in your Google ranking, though to get the best use out of this you need to optimise your blog for keywords - don't just blog about everything and anything - focus! -people (and Google) like focussed blogs.

Every, and I mean every, blog post should have a focus. Ask yourself, why should the reader read this? What information am I giving them today? People have very short attention spans and there is heaps to read out there on the net. Why should they read your post? These are the questions you need to ask yourself before you post.

Honestly, if you don't believe me, go and see the very good videos on blogging on the Google website itself. I think the name of the girl is Lisa - she's very direct, but boy, she is absolutely bang on the nail when it comes to getting visitors to your blog! And funny too! Hope this helps.

lifeafterdebt - just looked at your blog - you need to emphasize the "About me" section - stick it on a top tool-bar - you have an amazing story to tell (really) - if I were you i would be very excited about this!! - I would recommend though that you focus on how you dug yourself out of the hole in every blog - one tip at a time!! You have done it - this is a recession - there is heap of demand for a blog like this - go for it! Then, when you have your readership up, buy a domain, transfer the traffic to the domain and monetise it.
