What do certain adverts DO to babies?!

..The Direct Line advert in our case- since my dd was a few weeks old, she goes into a trance-like state whenever it comes on; it will stop a tantrum, a feed, anything. The world around her ceases to exist. She is now one and still loves it.

One of my colleagues asked me the other day if my dd liked the Direct Line advert- apparently it is so popular with babies that research is being carried out to find out what draws them to it, and parents are creating a demand for promotional direct line phones produced a few years ago... bizarre.

Any other adverts having this effect? Anyone know why?

Tried posting on chat earlier, but no response; is it just me who wonders?

Tethersend, same here. DS now 10 months and only just stopped giving himself whiplash to face the TV when he hears the beep beep beep beep. He's now onto the RED driving school one - another big red car!!

I'm convinced it's the colour red and certain theme tunes, like DS will stop when BBC news comes on (red studio and that beeping tune). Oh, and the One show (red titles and trumpet beep type theme). We have had to sky plus it as he went to bed one night before it came on, heard the music from upstairs and cried his eyes out as in BEDTIME IS AFTER THE ONE SHOW. We had to bring him downstairs and rewind it on sky so he could hear it before putting him back to bed. He slept fine after that.

Loving the One show

Thank the sweet lord for sky plus and youtube in the middle of the night...

Her other big love is La Roux, so you could be right about the red thing

DD loves the confused.com adverts that sponsor itv2 daytime, also the weather forecast and countdown! Can't say I've ever noticed her watching the directline adverts though.

my ds 18mnths now loves comfused.com as well. he drops everything when it comes on tv and is drawn to it like a magnet. he responds to nothing when its on. its so funny to watch him.

It's the conflict between the fact that a phone does not look like a living thing, yet somehow it behaves in a living sort of way. It almost seems to be smiling and laughing, but where is the face ?
So even very young babies are fascinated by it. [pop psychology emoticon]

Another one DS likes is the Come Dine with Me theme tune. I used to sky plus loads of them to watch when I was feeding him in the early days - you know how long those feeds used to go on for. He still stops and looks at the TV when it comes on now. Makes me giggle, but I am now thinking, do I have the TV on too much
