My DD who is 12 weeks old will happily look at you and smile and respond etc. She will hold her gaze to focus on faces and so on. However, DP and I have both noticed that quite often she totally avoids eye contact.

I wasn't worried but yesterday we went to Aquababies and at all points where you had to make eye contact with your baby, such as before submersion, while swimmig on their backs, my DD was looking round the room at everything but me.

I mean, it was good that she was relaxed and didn't give a fig about staring at me for reasrrance but isn't that a bit unusual?

All the other babies were staring at their mummy like their life depended on it.

Doesn't sound that unusual to me - sounds like she was just really interested in all the exciting things going on around her, not boring old mummy!

Our DD was totally distracted by anything and everything when a babe. I'm sure yours is perfectly normal and gorgeous.

My DD is the same, gazes at me when it suit her...but not when there's something far more interesting going on!

She also avoids eye contact when she's tired

That is reassurring to hear. I do hope it is that she is just happy and relaxed and interested in her surroundings.
