2 year old ds picking his lips and biting his gums when tired and in sleep

To the point where his pillow had blood all over it this morning Does anyone have any experience of this? I first realised he was doing it a few weeks ago when he was ill and in bed with me.

While drifting off he pulls any bit of skin off his lips. I moved his hand and told him not to as it would make it sore but he just pushed my hand away and says "No mummy!" and carry on. When he actually is asleep he chews his gums and inside of lips. Obviously this is making them very sore and sometimes he'll get upset when eating as it hurts. I've tried talking to him but that clearly won't work.

Has anyone had a toddler do this? And how did you get them to stop? Or will he just grow out of it?

Try putting a bit of vaseline on his lips when he's fast asleep to reduce dryness and dry bits he can pick at?

I know he's only 2 now, but if he continues to bite his cheeks would you consider chewing gum? Some people don't like gum, but it's better than chewing the cheeks.
