Overweight/obese child

anybody else out there with an overweight child? ds (7) is obese and i am at a loss as to what to do... he does love his chocolate and crisps but around 6 months ago i made a deliberate effort to tackle his weight and stop buying these, getting him out exercising more etc but i was pretty dismayed today looking at photos of the last year and seeing how much weight he has continued to put on. i've weighed him and put it into the nhs bmi calculator which puts him at obese .

I know there's room for improvement in his diet but I didn't think it was that bad. i know children whose diets are much worse. He has significant SN's too which makes things v difficult, his cognitive development is around the age of a toddler so there's no chance of him understanding the concept of healthy eating. and he just seems so young to go on a diet.

just wondering really if there is anyone else dealing with an overweight or obese child or if anyone has successfully tackled weight issues with their kids, esp very young kids.

Have you been to your GP for advice? They should be able to give you guidance and tell you whether/how his current diet could be altered.

Sorry I can't give you any better advice as I am no expert in this area.

I'd second GP too. How are portion sizes?

I agree speak to your GP.

BMI is not the only indication of obesity, for one thing. In fact, its actually pretty much useless, since it only looks at height versus weight. It doesn't take into consideration body build, muscle content, etc.

Morning Carrie - I dont have an obese child, but i do have a special needs child.

What kind of sn does your child have? I know that children on the autism spectrum or those with sensory issues can have trouble regulating their appetite. My son does.

Does he see anyone ie Pediatrician etc?
