How did you get rid of the dummy?

My DD is 3 and i want to finally get rid of the dummy but how?

We made dd go cold turkey when she turned 2. We explained to her that she was too old to have them now she was 2. She cried for a few nights and we had to find other ways to console her when she was upset but it wasn't too long before she stopped asking for it.

We tried the same with ds at 20 months but he would wake up crying all through the night for weeks and it was a nightmare. We decided to give them back to him but only at bed time. We'll probably try again in a few months and see how it goes.

dd turned 3 in May. We had managed to exchange the dummy at night for a while by telling her only big girls (who don't need dummies) got a bed time story. It worked.

However, we went on holiday to florida for while it was her birthday and she reverted a bit as she was frequently very tired.

So, after a couple of weeks at home I spoke to her one morning and we discussed how she was 3 now and didn't need a dummy. She agreed and I got her to throw all her dummies in the bin.
That was 2 weeks ago and she has been fine, she occasionally asks for it when tired during the day, but goes without.

Hung it on the christmas tree for father christmas to take away.

He left presents in it's place. My DS never asked for it after that day.

I agonised about this for weeks, and in the end it was a doddle.

Told ds for a few weeks prior that there were lots of new babies being born, and that they needed dummies, and that now he was a big boy he was going to send his to the babies, and that they would send him a present in return.

Then on the day, got him to help me find them all and package them up, fortunately our local postoffice is just accross the road and they know him well so they played along, and took the parcel, then the next day he got a pressie from the 'babies' to say thanks for the dummy.

On his third birthday we gave ds his presents and then told him we had a very special present but it could only be for boys who did not have dummys, he immediately took it out of his mouth and gave it to me and got his present, it was something he really loved and wanted so that helped. He never asked for it again.

I did it yesterday, we sat down and had a chat so she aggreed to throw her dummy in the bin now shes a big girl. she constantly looked in the bin all day crying, took a while to get to sleep and a few ups and downs in the night plus an early morning, but todays been better so fingers crossed for the night!

Well I think its fine for sleeping if they need it why give up?My dgs puts his in his drawer in the morning and gets it when he wants to sleep-no problem.He is 2.8.

I finally stopped sucking a dummy at 20 when I went to University, and it got too embarrassing hiding it from boyfriends.

However, my sister, who is a 29 year old married GP, still has hers when she's feeling low.

I suppose it's better than turning to fags or booze. And we both have lovely teeth

my DDs teeth are growing funny thats why i wanted to get her completeley off it, she went straight to sleep tonight so alls going well, still has blankey tho of course!
