Tantrums in a non speaking 22m old!!!

Help im tearing my hair out here!!

DS3 is doing this real high pitched shouting screaming when somethings not going his way. can just about cope indoors but when we are out its awful!! he was told to 'shush' today in Boots by another customer.

i know alot of it is probably frustration as he can't communicate with us.

have you tried baby signing with him, that might help him communicate his needs more easily so he becomes less frustrated?

Nicola, my dd2 is almost 3 and isn't talking properly yet. Most of the time I can understand her gestures and the odd words she says but she also does this high pitch scream that goes straight through you! when she doesn't get her way.

Most of the time if I can spot her going into one of her moods i try and distract her by saying if you behave then we'll go to the park, feed the ducks, play with xx etc.

I have had months of the screaming though to get to this point and I ignore anyone who has a go at her or I ask them if they would like to swop places with me. It usually shuts them up.

It is frustration and signing didn't work with her so we are now using the Picture exchange method which has helped a lot and we are now expanding it.

Sorry also forgot to mention that my two youngest ds have had recurrent ear infection. both now being referred to ENT (middle son is 3.5yr as may poss need grometts) ds3 poss has some fluid trapped behind ear drum which causes constant vibration so no sounds heard clearly..could be reason for speech delay so until further tests carried out for this i don't know about his speech. i would be keen to try signing with him but thought this was for younger babies?

My 22 month old is also not speaking particularly - has a working vocabulary of about 3 words, with another couple he has forgotten about .

He has now been referred for speech therapy.

I am interested in signing, but not sure if he is too old for this?

i think the same, he's starting to speak a little more now we can work out some of the words, he's saying his brothers names and tractor. we have referral to ENT on 8th July for his ears.

good luck with the speech therapy, does he get frustrated?

If a child can't speak they often tantrum. I was driving my DS2 insane by constantly asking him questions he couldn't answer (" shall we go to the park, do you want a drink, what's that you are playing with") until he was aged two a screaming ball of frustration.

My son and i used symbols and suigns. The symbols were nesecarry as he also had ( unbeknownst to me) asd. But signing definately helped calm him down.
And I stopped asking bloody questions which helped too.
