Anyone who never bothered with a bed guard on their toddler's bed?

Ds moved out of his cot at the weekend. He is sleeping well in the converted bed apart from falling out. He doesn't hurt himself, but wakes as he is uncomfortable and needs us to lift him back in.
What did you do?
DId you give in and buy a rail in the end?
How long until he gets used to it?

Hmmm, we haven't bought a bed guard, DS moved into his bed around age 2 and is nearly three now. He still falls out occasionally, we put a duvet on his floor to stop him hurting himself, but haven't got round to buying a bed guard

Mine never had one. Mainly because I bought 2 and neither of them fitted on the cot bed.
Put a few cushions on the floor, he'll be fine!

Never used one. If they fall out, just lift them back in (mine always stay asleep!)

I was way too precious with ds1, had bed guard ..cushions ...extra mattress on floor....not with ds2 though

Never had one. DD doesn't fall out, ds occasionally has. In the early days we put a travel cot mattress down the side of the bed.

Yes, we have the pile of cushions! 4

It is a converted cot, so very low anyway.

Just getting a bit tired, but I kind of thought 2 weeks was the norm to break habits?

He loves his big boy bed - keeps showing it to everyone who comes round. Hasn't worked out that he can get out it whenever he likes...Not looking forward to that.

...and thanks for the replies.
I was beginning to think I was unusual in this regard. Most of my RL friends' kids have beds which resemble Fort Knox (a la Curiousmama!)

i didnt have a bed guard for ds...but his bed was pretty low/close to the ground so we got by with cushions if i remember rightly.

i saw an ad for gro bag toddler bedding which zips the sheet to the duvet up one side...bit like a sleepping bag...probably really expensive though?

AH, beans, yes, I saw that. Costs far too much. We are going to get a single duvet and tuck it in sideways, iyswim? Atm he still loves his sleeping bag though.

Didn't buy one. DD has fallen out two or three times. SIL suggested we should buy one, but DH and I just pointed out that she'd only fall out when we took it away when she was older, so it's only putting off the (almost) inevitable.

Let's face it, I've been known to fall out of bed on occasion.

We did not bother either. They both fell out occasionally but haven't for a long time. We put some cushions on the floor for a while.

Never had a bed guard for any of my 3. DS1 never fell out, DS2 often fell out (and we had to go and put him back in), DS3 been in the bottom bunk less than a week and fallen out once, he whinged a bit then I heard him climb back into his bed - when I checked on him after he'd gone quiet (about 5 minutes after the "thud") he was snuggled up under his duvet again - he's 22 months.

Never had one
Just padded the floor with a couple of pillows/quilt
Or use the cot mattress next to the bed

We do the sideways single duvet when staying at friends/family and DD is in a single bed as opposed to her toddler bed.

I looked at the Growbag one too and decided too expensive.

yeah i agree..steep and redundant after a while.

(i also think it's cute when you see them face on the carpet legs in bed...fast asleep )

DS is in a single bed and touch wood hasn't fallen out so far. I decided that he would be more likely to hurt himself trying to climb over the bed guard than if he just fell out.

There is a large pile of teddies on the floor on either side. Also the bed is a wooden frame rather than a divan, and therefore very low. He won't do much damage.

Report
FAQinglovely · 26/03/2009 20:07

oh and i've never padded the floor either

We never had one but put a spare quilt on the floor for the first couple of nights. Specially with a low cot-bed, you might as well get them used to it at this stage. If they later move into a fullsize bed without a rail, there's further to fall!

DS1 fell out twice in the first 6 weeks and hasn't fallen out since.

DS2 hasn't ever fallen out.

We bought the bedguard and it didn't fit onto the boys beds.

Never had bed guard or any other childproofing in house - no major accidents to report (DD now 7yo), altho' she did fall off bed at about 8mnths when we were both napping together and she woke up first. She was fine and I was a nervous wreck.

Never had a bed guard. Ds only fell out once, dd1 rolls out reguarly, but she will sleep right on the edge!

Report
ChasingSquirrels · 27/03/2009 00:11

never used one (ds's moved at 2y3m and 2y5m respectively)
neither really fell out, although ds1 used to get out and sleep UNDER the bed .
Had a sideways single duvet on for both of them, tucked in on the outside of the bed - so harder to fall out of.
