i went to gymbabes this morning with my ds and there is a little boy there 3 weeks younger than mine and he's crawling, and pulling himself up and very mobile. i'm just a bit worried, my ds shows no interest in any of this and is happy to just sit. is it too early to worry?

please don't worry - everyone develops at a different speed and manner - some babies do not crawl, they just get up and cruise and then walk.

If he were 2 yrs old and not walking, you'd probably need to start looking for some professional advice, but at 9 months its best not to have expectations set too rigidly.

My son crawled and stood up at 11 months and was walking on his own at 14 - so he had only a 3 month crawl period.

DD didn't crawl until 11 months and didn't walk until 18 months - much later than all the other babies that we knew.
On the other hand, she would freak out all the other Mums as she has talked early. All babies develop at their own pace and there is no need to worry at all.

My dd was just the same. She just sat which was frustrating for me because everytime i left the room she cried!

She then, all of a sudden at 11 months, started crawling. I remember it was a Friday morning and she just decided to go for it. By the end of the day she was crawling around everywhere! Right after that she started cruising the furniture. She started walking at 13 months.

Sorry she started walking at 15 months! Where's my brain...

hi fiofio, yes his posture is pretty good, and he can roll over both ways. i guess he'll go when he's ready, he's happy enough to sit and play now.

Ds2 started crawling on Thursday-he is nearly 14 months old. He's also not pulling himself up and he didn't sit til around 10 months, but he definately smiles more than other babies and I'm really not worried. They all reach their milestones when they're good and ready.

normal in my household!

My dd didn't roll until 9 months, she just sat there. Then she didn't crawl but could get right round the house by rolling! She crawled at 15 months (because you can't get up stairs by rolling) and walked at 16 months.

So I would say entirely in the range of normal (and much more restful than dd2 who thought she was a mountaineer from 13 month onwards)

One of mine couldn't sit up reliably until she was 11 months and was heavy enough for a forward facing car seat from 6 months!!!!

my dd never rolled and started crawling at 10mths.... my ds (dc1) was crawling at 7mths so i expected her to do it early too, especially as he was much chubbier than her at that age!!... different children and different speeds of development!! it'll even out by time he's at nursery/school... dont worry abotu a 3week gap... please, or you'll be doing it forever!!

Oh gosh, far too early to worry! My ds is now 10 months but was as you describe at 8 and half months and everyone elses babies seemed to be nearly walking while mine just sat there and got grumpy and frustrated! I was at a 'stay and play' club about a month ago and there was a baby there a week older than my ds and he was just so mobile compared to my ds. However, by the time my ds turned 9 and half months, he was crawling all over and climbing/ clambering over anything in his way! It seems to have happened all of a sudden and I'm still in shock! They are all so different and in my experience, these things happen in leaps and bounds and when you are least expecting it!

My DD didn't move at all until she was 10.5 months when she started doing a weird shuffle thing. She rolled at 11.5 months, cruised at about 14 months and walked when she was 15 months.

DS rolled at 4.5 months, crawled at 8.5 months, cruised at 9 months......and walked at 15 months.

I would never have thought they would have walked at the same age, but they did.

My dd2 didnt move til nearly 12 months and then started to crawl properly at about 13. She is now just walking in the last few weeks and she is now 17months.

Other children I know of her age were walking at 9months (as I was so my mum says). Guess you just have to wait for them to do it, but I know how hard it is when everyone else's dc are doing more. People have only just giving me funny looks when I tell them how old she is as if to say she appears younger than she is.

Mind you, my ds1 is always mistaken for being 1-2 years older than he is as he is so big so seeming younger is definatly preferable imo.

A childminder at a toddler group said to me when I was telling her how worried I was that dd wasnt walking said that when they are tiny, we keep trying to get them to walk and talk, then as soon as they can we spend our time telling them to 'sit still!' and 'be quiet!'

My DD never really rolled, crawled at 11 months and walked at 19 months. It was really hard because all her little friends were running around like crazy. She got there in the end though, and like MrsTittlemouse's DD, she talked early.

Still doesn't roll though.

My eldest didn't roll, crawl, bottom shuffle or even get himself from lying to sitting or sitting to standing at that age. He walked at nearly 22 months and did need physiotherapy to get him going. My youngest didn't roll or crawl until about 10 months old and walked at 17 months. He's now physically quite advanced.

So long as your child can sit up well and is happy doing what he's doing, then I wouldn't be remotely concerned - my eldest was really quite miserable not being able to do anything, which was how I knew something was wrong: he wasn't the laid back type who couldn't be bothered, he just didn't have the physical power required to do the things he wanted to do.

I guess you've got the message by now but just to say the same as everyone else...My DD never crawled. Or shuffled or anything. Walked at 14mo. I think it's fine.
