He is 9 months old and pretty normal I think!

The one thing that he does that is a little odd is spinning wheels round for AGES. He loves wheels..looks at every wheel he passes and when he has a car in his hand he just spins the wheel round and round.

Any other LO's doing similar things or is it just my wierdy one!

Oh this is normal. Its the interest in shapes / letters starting with O as much as with movement and mechanics (male thing).

That's why buggies have seatbelts - or they'd fall out watching their own wheels sometimes.

It's incredible that when he's with his cousin of the same age she's so not interested in wheels. Boys will be boys!

Oh yes, mine loved wheels too. Now it is anything with wheels: freight trains, El trains, passenger trains, tank engines, dump trucks, front loaders, backhoe loaders, cars and buses. As you can tell, I am now an expert on construction vehicles and types of trains.

My friend's DS's first word was 'circle' because of his wheel obsession.

Totally normal. I have yet to meet a girl who is fascinated by wheels though.

DS 13months was nought a trike fr Christmas, he has yet to sit on it for more than a couple of minutes - the correct way to play is apparently to turn it upside down and spin the wheels, and check the shiny bits in the middle of the wheels!

How funny UR. I'm sure DS will be the same. I'll have to brush up on my vehicle knowledge (which is nil!)

Yorky-My DS does exactly the same with his big toy cars. Can spend 20 minutes with a car turned upside down just spinning!!!

It's amazing what you learn when you have to. I never knew there were so many different types of diggers ! At 2.6, DS still likes to turn trikes etc upside down so, if it is a phase, it is a long one.

Next stop, Dinosaurs.

Underrated - my 16 mo. DD is fascinated by wheels! She first discovered the wheels on her buggy and now goes around saying "wheel, wheel" at any wheel she sees!

ahh, so it's not just a boy thing.

I think it's a round thing. DS is currently sat infront of the washing machine watching it go round and round . He LOVES it although occasionally gets a bit scared.

I had my son assessed for an asd at around 13 months because of his obsession . she said that if it develops into normal play then fine - he is now obsessed with cars (20 months).

He used to put his finger in the axle to stop the spin, which is another normal sign - any interest in the workings of the spin, rather than a fixation on the same microscopic area of spinning is normal. hope that makes some sense...

Difficult to say where his interest lies..but I'd say it's the workings.

I suppose they told you your DS is completely normal then?

I'm still fasinated by wheels. I think I pass as normal ( ish) some people do think it a little odd that my lad wants a unicycle - he was 2 yesterday. BUt then they find out hes my boy... nuff said.

Does your boy like clic trac, tubes for rolling cars down, cotton reels on a string?

It's probably not just a phase then, I'll prepare myself for a life long fascination of things that roll!

My almost 9 month old is fascinated by wheels. Even on his friend's fisherprice plane, full of little people etc he just upturned the boarding staircase to play with the wheels. He makes a low chuntering noise while he turns them round and round. Also makes this noise when he plays with the labels on soft toys, although a Taggie blanket goes ignored .

DS has just turned hoover upside down (he's a strong 10 month old!!) and he's spinning away!

yup, completely normal. they did the usual checks - eye contact, resonding to name, interest in other children (although obviously he was too young to play with them).

they said that the main thing was that the kid was playing with the whole object and not obsessing about a tiny detail. my ds developed from being interested in just the wheel (honestly, in baby groups he would crawl away from the group and spin other kids buggy wheels incessently) to moving the whole object, to his current obsession with cars and trains.

at 20 months, he now 'pretends' that the cars are real, makes all the appropriate noises and 'drives' them over everything - the beginnings of imaginative play i believe - another positive sign of his social development.
