Preference for left hand

Hi everyone

My son is around 5.5 months old and recently, we have noticed that he prefers the use of his left hand. In terms of his right hand, he often has it half balled/curled up rather than fully open. I've seen him grab things from time to time with the right hand but I just feel that the development of his right hand is way behind that of his left hand. His right/left legs both work the same though. Having googled it, I've not had much luck so I thought I'd post here to see if anyone had the same experience. Thanks

Could he be left handed?

I've read that they don't get a preference at such an early age.

Hey, my son had this and I freaked out. Asked for a physio referral from your gp or health visitor. Whilst I was waiting I massaged my sons arm (it’s like he forgot it was there) and restricted the left so he had to use it. I also took him to a cranial osteopath which helped with his movement etc a lot. The physio think he had Torticollis (don’t quote me on the spelling). Whilst he had no misshapen head he struggled turning to the right and she thinks he just didn’t realise it was there. He’s just turned 10 months and crawling/ pulling up/ I can’t notice a difference. He also had a scan on the soft spot and nothing was found. I think they only did that as I presented as quite neurotic and the paediatrician wanted to calm me. Good luck.

Whats wrong with being left handed??

My ds6 is a lefty, up until he was 3 he would switch between the 2 which is what they do apparently. We knew early on he favoured his left. Dd2 seems to prefer left too.

There's nothing wrong with being left handed. It's more that babies shouldn't show a preference so early on and if they do it could be because of a development issue. It's another thing for us to worry about basically!
