6 year old still doesn't wake when he needs a wee

My 6 year old son still has to wear pull ups to bed as he still doesn't wake when he needs a wee, it's not now and again he mite av an accident it's every single nite!! We have regularly tried him without pull ups, (incase he was just getting lazy and cudnt b bothered to go to the toilet in the night as he's on a top bunk) we'd pack his bed with towels, wake him when we go to bed for a wee, (which is a major task in itself, he fights against us and wans to just stay in bed an go back to sleep, we literally av to drag him to the toilet while he's half asleep) we get him to have a wee every half hour before bed, we limit drinks after dinner and we've tried getting him to drink more in the day but nothing seems to work. I no this is not his fault and I have never told him off for it, I haven't taken him to the doctors as I no it's not classed as a medical issue till his 7, im just so worried that he's not gonna grow out of it as he's such a heavy sleeper!! Has anyone else had problem like this, if their child grew out of it, or if they have any tips that mite help us???? Any advice would be much appreciated xx Thanks in advance

I can only add that we are in exactly the same predicament with my 6yo DD. So watching with interest x

I think this is a lot more common than many think. DD had the same issues. we saw incontinence nurse after 7 birthday (they don't see you before as it is so common and normal to some extend).

one thing we figured with DD was that she did not drink enough during the day and there fore her bladder never learned to hold much urine. She was put on a drinking schedule so to speak to get her to drink more during the day and no drinks after 6 pm. she was dry at night within 3 months.

DNephew is nearly 8 and still needs pull ups. He's waiting for a referral to the enuresis clinic, bit it is certainly not uncommon for 6 year olds, particularly boys, to not be dry at night. The anti-diuretic hormone vasopressin needs to have started production before it's even possible to be dry at night and it can be quite late in coming in boys.

6 is nothing to worry about. Your GP may refer him at 7, in other places it's 8.

We're just starting to crack this with our 6 year old DS. He's going into Year 3 from September and they do an overnight trip so really want to get him out of pull ups before then.

He has wet every single night and more often than not leaked onto the bed and most days damp pants too. We started increasing his intake of water and banned any juice/squash and fizzy drinks. We also make sure he stops drinking at 5:30 but has a good full glass just before.

He then has a wee every half an hour until bed at 8pm when we attach an alarm that goes off when he starts to wet and wakes him up stopping the flow. We then take him to the loo to finish off and then change him and reattach the alarm.

It's Night 11 tonight and although at first he would sleep right through and we had to get up and change pants 5 times for the first couple of nights, he's been completely dry for the last 3 nights 🎉🎉🎉🎉

They are expensive but I honestly didn't think it'd work this well as quickly as he is such a deep sleeper and he's never had a dry night before so may be worth a go.

Thank u everyone for ur comments, nice to know my son isn't the only one to b suffering and that it is quite common, definitely put my mind at rest, think I'll look into the bed alarm x

have you tries a Chiropractor or Osteopath? there may be a nerve irritation in his lower back or pelvis so his brain isn't getting the message

He's only ever had 1 dry night and was worrying that keeping him in pull ups was the wrong thing, but I wet the bed until I was 12, so was worried it could be hereditary?...

Don't worry . experts say it could be due to many reasons. Anyway I have heard that Enuresis runs in families. That is if you urinate while you are asleep, there's a good chance that a close relative also will when he or she was a kid.
