Foot pointing outwards 1.5 year old

Hi everyone,

My son is 1 and a half years old. He started walking last month. I always thought his left foot pointed outwards a bit but was difficult to be sure from him sitting and crawling. I mentioned it to our GP but she wasn't concerned.

Since he's been walking for the past month though I feel it's really obvious. When he has bare feet it goes outwards and his ankle almost touches the floor. I thought I may be being a panicky Mum but I haven't mentioned it to anyone apart from my husband and my Mum actually mentioned it to me yesterday when she had my son while I was at work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to video behind him, to be able to show the GP? Of course she will want to observe but it may help for me to have a recording too?

Thank you in advance.x

When you say his foot "points outwards" and "his ankle almost touches the floor"

Do you mean that he's "going over" on his foot so that his inner ankle is almost touching the floor?

Or do you mean by "pointing out" that his ankle is pointing out and rolling over.....and his outer ankle is almost touching the floor?

Thank you for your reply VioletBam.
Sorry, I didn't explain it very well.
He's going over on his foot (left foot) so that his inner ankle is almost touching the floor.x

No worries! It's hard when you're explaining something like that...I think, that what you're describing is something called over-pronation.

It's not serious from what I've read but you should definitely go back to the GP for more advice.

Does it look like this

Yes it looks exactly like that! He doesn't seem in pain with it but he will sit down for a little while after walking for more that five minutes and he does fall over quite abit which I used to put down to him being clumsy bless him but now I'm thinking it may be connected. I'll have a read up on over-pronation and make a GP appointment tomorrow. Thank you so much VioletBam.xx

It's something which from googling seems quite common and it's something which can be managed too. I'm glad you've got something to reference now. xx

Sounds like his ankles are pronated. My 2 year old has this and it has improved overtime. Eventually he made need something in his shoes to correct it. As he gets older invest in good quality supportive footwear.

Thank you LouTheMac. Did your GP make a referral or did they just monitor them? Xx

Sorry for the late reply - just monitoring him as he caught up on walking very quick and was running/jumping etc as usual so as meeting all milestones they were not too concerned.
