thumb sucker- HELP!!!!

After a trip to the dentist when DD was told her teeth have begun to stick out I have been on and on at her to try to kick the habit. She pops it in a lot, not so much apparently at school, but times when it's bad are.....when she's tired; watching TV and asleep.....
Help? Does anyone have any tips as I feel so mean constantly asking her to remove her thumb and I've tried for a few months alone but not getting anywhere on breaking the habit?
She is 4 and in reception!
